Railroad Yard Worker

Job Summary

Railroad Yard Workers are responsible for the movement and storage of freight trains in rail yards. They work as part of a team to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the yard. Yard workers must follow instructions from their supervisors and communicate effectively with other workers. They are also responsible for maintaining equipment and tools used in yard operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain equipment and tools used in yard operations
  • Operate track switches to guide trains into the appropriate tracks and sidings
  • Connect and disconnect rail cars using hand tools and powered equipment such as a switch engine or a yard goat
  • Inspect rail cars for damage and ensure that they are properly secured and positioned
  • Perform routine maintenance on track switches, rail cars, and other yard equipment
  • Follow safety protocols and regulations to avoid accidents or injuries, including the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to specific procedures for handling hazardous materials
  • Coordinate with other workers to ensure that trains are loaded and unloaded efficiently and on schedule
  • Document and report any issues or incidents that occur during yard operations to supervisors or other relevant parties
