Under the direction of the CTO, this position is a key leader for the technology department and the broader The University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by Dell Medical School organization, facilitating and enabling our human health research mission.

Key to the role is the ability to connect with research teams throughout The University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by Dell Medical School organization and across the larger UT Austin campus, making connections, providing support, and acting as the research liaison for the technology team. The scope of the role includes basic research, translational research and clinical research, focusing on how to use technology and data in new and differentiated ways.

Working closely with The University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by Dell Medical School CISO, the Clinical Informaticist will also ensure that data privacy and cybersecurity protections are appropriately implemented and applied in tools and technology used for research. Collaboration with University of Texas System and other healthcare organizations across University of Texas is also a key part of this role. Occasional travel to other University of Texas system sites may be required.

The right candidate is a continuous learner, has research and informatics experience from complex environments (including IRB interactions), and is accomplished in translating research needs to actionable technology and data solutions. Independent stakeholder management and coalition building is expected, enabled by great communication skills.

Core tradecraft deliverables, the creation of which the Research Informaticist will lead, include:

  • Tangible and practical principles to be followed by technology enabled research activities, associated escalation model for the (few) cases where agreement cannot be achieved on the ground in a research project.

  • Research technology and data roadmap embodying the research element of our platform milestone roadmap.

  • Mapping and triaging all current research technology solutions against our platform landscape, creating a roadmap for what to phase out and when.

  • Informed triage of new research technology requests, including vendor technology evaluations and platform strategy fit.

  • Security and privacy architecture for our overall research technology landscape.

  • Executive level presentation materials to story-tell roadmap and platform topics.

Rightsizing time and effort spent on various activities is necessary, keeping in mind our 5-year timeframe for establishing a world leading Academic Medical Center.

Purpose

The Research Informaticist will lead requirements development activities, drive research technology portfolio cataloging and optimization, translate research requirements into technical solutions, and provide oversight of research related technology project execution.

Responsibilities

  • Deep understanding of human health data and how such data may be applied, including image, genomic, and time series data. Fluent in all aspects of data driven research, with a demonstrated ability to assess multiple factors in formulating recommendations.

  • Experience in establishing learning and training programs for research faculty and student researchers. Train people in how to use and troubleshoot data systems.

  • Ability and desire to work directly with research teams, translate requirements into technology needs, and navigate the technology organization to meet the needs identified. Additionally, engage effectively in day-to-day hands-on research informatics activities.

  • Comfortable working with staff at all levels of the organization. Work style of collaboration balanced with the need to execute and complete priority work. Facilitates cross team communication and work.

  • Business-driven, people-focused, with exceptional influencing and storytelling skills; excellent organizational, multi-tasking, presentation, and time-management skills; strong verbal and written communication skills. Serves as a role model and mentor for staff. Takes accountability for individual and group responsibilities.

  • Experienced in establishing credibility, obtaining buy-in and leading multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced and matrixed environment. Proven track record of delivering research enabling solutions in complex environments. Proven ability to develop effective relationships, and drive change. Escalates appropriately.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in area of responsibility.

  • Understanding of clinical workflows, terminology and practice. Acting as a mediator between clinical staff and research faculty.

  • Ability to develop and foster strategic partnerships with data and technology vendors, startups, and industry leaders that will enable and accelerate data driven research.

  • Develop, implement and monitor technology related policies, procedures and standards in collaboration with other stakeholders.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Clinical Informatics or a related field, and 10 years of related experience including previous experience in working with research teams. Leadership gravitas. Prior experience in complex at-scale organizations, developing and implementing strategies for maximizing the research value of human health data. Broad knowledge of data trends and robust industry understanding. Experience analyzing, categorizing and leveraging collected human health data. Experience observing and optimizing the research use of data. Experience working with IRB protocols and processes within healthcare regulated environments. Experience working with EMR data from full-function platforms such as Epic, Cerner and Athena Health, across ambulatory and in-patient settings. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD degree in related field. Experience working at an Academic Medical Center. Experience with developing and managing strategic partnerships. Experience in strategic planning. Experience with developing programs to analyze data and using it to anticipate treatments and outcomes. Experience with time series health data from sensors and personal devices. Experience with clinical trials. Personal research experience is a plus.
