Job Description

The Department of Earth Sciences and Engineering (ESE) at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for an open-rank tenured/tenure-track position in the general area of economic geology to begin in January or August 2025. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program, and to teach a diversity of courses including courses in economic geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, and petrology at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Potential research collaboration opportunities in economic geology exist with various campus entities, including the Departments of Mining and Explosives Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, and Engineering Management. Additionally, there are opportunities within several university research centers, such as the Materials Research Center, the Energetic Materials and Rock Characterization and Geomechanics Center, the High-Performance Computing Center, and the recently established Critical Mineral Research Center. Local establishments with active research include the U.S. Geological Survey (Mid-continent Geospatial Mapping Center), the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and Fort Leonard Wood. There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to have a 0% joint appointment in the Department of Mining & Explosives Engineering.

Missouri University of Science & Technology, formerly the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy, has over 150 years of experience in minerals education and research. The University and the Departments of Earth Sciences & Engineering, Mining & Explosives Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering have collaborated on significant mining and minerals research over that period. Today, Missouri S&T is a leading research institution on critical minerals, a member of the Department of Energy's Critical Materials Innovation Hub, and with over $22 million in active critical minerals research grants.
