About the Job

The Department of Soil, Water and Climate hires seasonal employees annually to advance research and education in our program. These positions are either temporary or casual in nature (see definition below). All of the positions hired are hourly, with schedules set by a supervisor which may vary.

Salary: Minimum hourly pay $15.00/hour

Eligibility and Restrictions:

  • Students not enrolled in any of the UMN system campuses
  • Not currently employed by the University of Minnesota.
  • Employees in these positions perform a wide variety of non-academic and/or academic work responsibilities on a temporary or casual work schedule.
  • Minnesota Statute limits the eligibility, number of hours and/or days worked in this job classification.
  • The definition of temporary: Employees are limited to 67 or fewer days of work in a calendar year.
    • 100 day temporary: Students who are not enrolled at any of the University of Minnesota system campuses but are full-time students from a nonprofit or public institution prior to being hired and intend to continue as a student during or after the temporary employment; under age 22; and the appointment does not exceed 100 workdays in a calendar year.
  • The definition of casual: Employees can work 14 or fewer hours each week and are not limited to 67 days of work in a calendar year.

Duties:

30 % assist with plot layout and maintenance
25 % fertilization, planting, sampling
15 % preparation of plant and soil samples for laboratory analysis,
15 % assist with data collection and data entry
15 % other duties as assigned

Required:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent

The mission of the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate is to advance the understanding of Earth system processes and the interaction among land, atmosphere, and water. Through research, teaching, and outreach we seek to:

  • Improve and protect the quality of soil, air, and water resources in natural and managed ecosystems;
  • Enhance agricultural and forest productivity and sustainability;
  • Predict and mitigate impacts of environmental and climate change on ecosystems and society; and
  • Provide science based knowledge for improved decision making and a better informed citizenry.
