IRB Specialist II
The Institutional Review Board Specialist II will process and review research protocols involving human subjects and related actions, and obtain required institutional approvals. This position requires excellent communication skills and appropriate application of research administration principles, practices, and procedures.
IRB Specialist III The Institutional Review Board Specialist
III will conduct independent initial, expedited, and continuing reviews of complex research studies - including clinical trials and
FDA-regulated research. Provide regulatory guidance (such as
DHHS and
FDA regulations) to evaluate participant risk and informed consent, counseling principal investigators, study coordinators, and students on submission procedures and compliance requirements. Assist in training new
OHSP staff or campus researchers and help update internal office procedures and guidelines. |
| Minimum Education and Experience |
IRB Specialist II:
Bachelor's Degree; Three (3) or more years of professional experience in research administration or regulatory compliance; Three (3) or more years of demonstrated experience conducting regulatory review of research involving biomedical and/or social behavioral research design; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
IRB Specialist III:
Bachelor's Degree. Five (5) years of related professional experience in research administration or regulatory compliance to include conducting intensive, expeditious, regulatory review research involving biomedical and/or social behavioral research design and comprehensive knowledge of regulations (
HHS,
FDA,
HIPPA) and ethical principles regarding human subject research; or equivalent combination of education and experience. |

| Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Institutional Review Board Specialist II Essential Duties:
- Complete the pre-review process for new IRB protocol applications, screen revised applications and resubmissions, modification requests, and obtain the needed institutional approvals while securely maintaining IRB records as appropriate to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Assist investigators by interpreting applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, federal regulations, and other compliance-related requirements and advising them on how to comply with these requirements.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations.
- Provide clear, concise, and detailed correspondence to investigators to ensure concerns, questions, and rationale are appropriately communicated.
- Conduct IRB assistance workshops and training presentations and identify educational opportunities for the UTD research community.
- Assist IRB team with system improvements and implementation.
- Read literature and attend training and other functions as necessary to keep abreast of relevant scientific, regulatory, and technical developments related to oversight of research.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills required to work effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, and investigators.
- Computer proficiency and comfort with electronic technology required.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and apply complex regulations, policies, and procedures.
Institutional Review Board Specialist III Essential Duties:
- Ensure ongoing human subjects research is conducted in accordance with IRB-approved protocols as well as existing regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Work with other HRPO officers of administration to ensure uniformity of review and compliance with IRB standard operating procedures, applicable policies, and applicable federal, state, and local statutes.
- Assist OHSP leadership in developing policies and procedures to ensure continuous quality improvement of an effective human research protection program, including implementing emerging changes to regulatory requirements and renewing and editing existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Facilitate communication between the UTD IRB and researchers by developing educational materials and collaborating with researchers to improve understanding of and compliance with UTD requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Assist with routine Post-approval monitoring of both IRB-approved protocols and internal OHSP activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Remote Work Notice: After the probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. Must be located within the
DFW Area and have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.
