South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.

The Biotechnology and Molecular Biosciences Residential Faculty member will provide high-quality instruction in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, and related biological sciences, with primary responsibility for courses supporting the college's biotechnology curriculum. The faculty member will develop and deliver engaging lecture and laboratory experiences that emphasize current biotechnology techniques, including molecular methods, nucleic acid analysis, biomolecular separation, cell and microbial techniques, and contemporary laboratory instrumentation. Responsibilities include maintaining and updating curriculum to reflect advances in biotechnology and workforce needs, mentoring students in undergraduate research and work-based learning experiences, supporting student success, and collaborating with faculty, industry partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen biotechnology education and career pathways. The faculty member may also teach general biology or other related courses based on departmental needs and will participate in college service, assessment, program development, and professional development activities.

50% - Instruction and Student Learning
Provides high-quality instruction to students in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, general biology, and related disciplines in classroom, laboratory, online, and/or hybrid environments. Develops and delivers engaging, student-centered learning experiences; prepares instructional materials; evaluates student learning; provides timely feedback; and maintains academic support hours to assist and mentor students.

15% - Biotechnology Laboratory, Curriculum, and Assessment
Develops, evaluates, and continuously improves biotechnology curriculum, laboratory exercises, instructional materials, and assessments. Incorporates current biotechnology methods, laboratory instrumentation, safety practices, and emerging technologies into courses. Participates in course, program, and institutional assessment activities and uses assessment results to improve student learning.

15% - Student Research, Mentoring, and Work-Based Learning
Mentors students participating in undergraduate research, Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), independent study, internships, and other experiential or work-based learning opportunities. Supports students in developing laboratory, research, scientific communication, problem-solving, and career-readiness skills.

10% - Program Development and Industry/Community Partnerships
Contributes to the development and growth of biotechnology and molecular biosciences programs and pathways. Collaborates with biotechnology, biomedical, healthcare, research, university, and other industry and community partners to ensure curriculum remains responsive to workforce and transfer needs. May participate in advisory committees, recruitment activities, articulation efforts, internships, and employer engagement.

5% - College, Department, and District Service
Participates in department, division, college, and district meetings, committees, assessment activities, accreditation and program-review efforts, student recruitment and outreach, and other activities associated with the responsibilities of Residential Faculty.

5% - Professional Development and Discipline Currency
Maintains professional competence and remains current with developments in biotechnology, molecular biosciences, laboratory technologies, research, and teaching and learning. Participates in professional development through conferences, workshops, research, professional organizations, industry engagement, scholarship, and other appropriate activities.

Master's degree or higher in a biology discipline. Biology (biological sciences, life sciences, BIO) is a basic research lab science discipline such as cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, marine biology, zoology, botany, ecology, developmental, evolutionary, neurobiology, and other disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.

OR

Master's degree or higher in an applied biology discipline. Applied biology includes public health (epidemiology, nutrition, environmental health, biostatistics), bioengineering, biotechnology, environmental science, conservation biology, wildlife management, exercise physiology, pathology, nutrition science, and other applied biology disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.

OR

Master's degree or higher in medicine or health care including graduate or professional degrees such as MD, DO, DDS/DMD, DPM, DVM, PA, DPT, DC, ND, MBChB or MBBS, and other health care-related disciplines approved by the Biology Instructional Council. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

OR

Master's degree or higher in biology education, science education or secondary education with 18 semester graduate credits in biology and/or applied biology courses (see criteria A and B). The required 18 credits of graduate coursework may include up to 6 semester hours of science teaching methods courses. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

A. Graduate education in a relevant biological, biotechnology, or clinical laboratory discipline.
B. Demonstrated professional laboratory experience in biotechnology, molecular, clinical, diagnostic, biomedical, microbiological, cellular, biochemical, or related laboratory environments.
C. Experience with contemporary laboratory techniques used in biotechnology, molecular biology, biomedical science, or clinical laboratory environments, including several of the following:
D. Teaching, training, or instructional experience in biotechnology or related biological and laboratory sciences.
E.  Experience designing, conducting, supervising, or supporting laboratory-based projects and applied learning experiences.
F.  Experience mentoring, training, or supervising students or laboratory personnel.
G. Experience connecting biotechnology and laboratory education with workforce and industry needs.

Ability to lift 30 lbs, be available for outreach events on weekends and/or evenings as needed, and work with industry partners to develop workforce opportunities for students by implementing an advisory board.
