Position summary

Manages and supports specialty and medical coding for the Physician Organization Shared Services' professional billing and collection functions. This is a hands-on coding leadership role overseeing daily coding operations, supervising and supporting coding staff, ensuring coding accuracy and compliance, and partnering with physicians and billing leadership to improve coding and reimbursement.

The ideal candidate must have a CPC certification (CPC-A candidates will not be considered) and a strong surgical physician/professional coding background. Hospital/facility coding alone does not meet the requirement. Previous coding management or supervisory experience is required, with approximately 5 years preferred, along with strong Epic and coding system edit experience.

A key focus will be denial management, including identifying root causes, resolving coding and billing issues, and implementing process improvements to reduce recurring denials. The Manager will also provide hands-on coaching, training, and guidance to the coding team while collaborating with physicians and leadership to improve billing accuracy.

Key responsibilities

* Manage day-to-day physician coding operations, workflow, and staff assignments
* Lead and supervise coding staff, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance reviews
* Ensure accurate coding and compliance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines
* Manage and resolve coding, billing, and denial issues and identify root causes
* Develop and implement coding policies, procedures, training, and process improvements
* Monitor coding quality, productivity, and staff performance
* Identify and resolve billing system and coding edit issues
* Partner with physicians, PO leadership, Billing, Pricing & Contracting, and vendors
* Provide hands-on coding guidance, mentoring, and training
* Stay current on coding, billing, payer, and regulatory requirements

Minimum qualifications

CPC certification required; CPC-A candidates will not be considered
Strong surgical physician/professional coding experience required
Hospital/facility coding alone does not meet the requirement
Previous coding management or supervisory experience required; approximately 5 years preferred
Strong Epic and coding system edit experience
Experience with denial management and coding/billing issue resolution
Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, CCI, LCD, and CMS requirements
Strong leadership, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills

Education:

Associate's degree required, preferably in Medical Records

Experience:

5+ years of coding experience preferred
Strong surgical physician/professional coding experience required
Previous coding management or supervisory experience required
Physician billing/professional coding experience strongly preferred

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
