THE POSITION

As a Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor with the Department of Corrections at SCI Phoenix, you will help guide inmates as they learn real-world mechanic skills. This role offers a rewarding chance to share your expertise while supporting the safe and efficient operation of the facility. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on supervising inmate work crews while teaching the standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade. As a Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Work Crew Supervision: Oversee inmate work crews and inspect completed automotive mechanic assignments
  • Trade Instruction: Provide training in inspection, repair and overhaul methods for a wide range of automotive equipment
  • Tool Management: Issue, track and account for tools and materials used in daily work
  • Material Planning: Determine needed tools and materials and submit purchase requests as required
  • Documentation Duties: Record inmate training progress, attendance and assignment details

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036 (before taxes).
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Emissions Inspection Certification and an active Pennsylvania Inspection Mechanic certification for class C vehicles and any other class of vehicles used in the facility.

Other Requirements:
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
