The UNC Health Anesthesia Support Department is seeking a highly motivated Anesthesia Technician to join a team where your technical expertise directly supports safe anesthesia care for patients every day.

As an Anesthesia Technician, you will play an essential role in supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. Working alongside Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, CAAs, Residents, and other perioperative professionals, you will help ensure that anesthesia equipment, supplies, and technology are ready when they are needed most. What You'll Do

Clinical & Patient Care Support

• Work closely with Anesthesiologists and CRNAs throughout all phases of anesthesia care, including pre-induction, induction, maintenance, emergence, extubation, and patient transport.
• Assist with invasive and non-invasive monitoring equipment and support the anesthesia care team during patient procedures.
• Prepare fluids, equipment, and clinical setups while maintaining appropriate sterile technique during line placement.
• Anticipate anesthesia care team needs and proactively provide the equipment and supplies required for safe patient care.
• Assist with patient positioning and transport while maintaining patient safety, privacy, and dignity.
• Properly collect, label, and handle specimens for laboratory processing.
• Follow infection prevention practices, PPE requirements, sharps safety, and laser safety standards..

Operate and Maintain Anesthesia Advanced Technology

• Set up, inspect, calibrate, test, and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment to ensure clinical readiness.
• Complete the department's 12-point equipment inspection and identify potential equipment concerns before they affect patient care.
• Perform quality control activities and participate in the department's anesthesia equipment Quality Assurance program.
• Maintain equipment in safe working order and promptly communicate equipment issues requiring additional service or repair to the team lead, supervisor or manager.
• Demonstrate knowledge and proper use of anesthesia machines, circuits, monitors, scopes, and other anesthesia technology.
• Maintain accurate equipment documentation and follow established safety and regulatory requirements related to equipment.

Ensure Operating Room Readiness & Supply Management

• Prepare anesthesia equipment and supplies for surgical procedures and ensure operating rooms are properly equipped before each case.
• Inspect supplies for sterility, expiration dates, and packaging integrity.
• Accurately check and label fluids and medications and remove expired, damaged, or improperly labeled items from use.
• Clean and disinfect anesthesia equipment using approved solutions and established infection prevention practices.
• Perform appropriate scope care and documentation according to department policy.
• Maintain anesthesia supply areas, cabinets, and automated dispensing systems.
• Restock supplies and equipment and return unused items to their appropriate locations.
• Alert team lead, supervisor, or manager about supply stock outs or any possible supply interruptions.
• Prioritize multiple clinical demands and respond effectively to changing surgical and anesthesia needs.

Summary:
Performs technical work in setting up, calibrating and troubleshooting anesthesia equipment assisting the Anesthesiologist or CRNA with placing invasive and non- invasive monitoring devices on patients, ensuring necessary equipment is in good working condition and properly set up for the anesthesia procedure.

Responsibilities:
1. Assists the Anesthesiologist or CRNA with invasive and non-invasive monitoring devices on patients and positioning and transport of patients. Prepares fluids and setups for use and observes sterile technique during line placement. Assists with the preinduction, induction, maintenance and extubation /transport of all phases of an anesthetic, anticipating anesthesia care team needs. Correctly labels and handles specimens to be sent to the laboratory. Uses personal protective equipment, handles sharps safely and practices laser safety.
2. Performs quality control and troubleshooting on assigned anesthesia equipment. Maintains equipment in good working order through 12 point inspection. Checks for sterility, date of expiration and any holes/tears in packaging of supplies. Checks and labels fluids/medications accurately, discards outdated/unlabeled fluids and medications. Completes department Quality Assurance program for anesthesia equipment.
3. Sets up anesthesia equipment and supplies. Cleans equipment with approved solution daily, practices scrupulous scope care and documentation according to policy and assures anesthesia equipment is clean before it's use in OR. Prioritizes clinical activities appropriately. Demonstrates both proper use of equipment and knowledge of anesthesia circuits and supplies. Restocks cabinets/ADS supplies and returns unused supplies/equipment to appropriate locations.

Education Requirements:
* Graduation from an accredited Anesthesia Technician program (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Basic Life Support certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
* If graduation from an accredited Anesthesia Technician program: No prior experience required.
* If a High School diploma or GED: six months of operating room experience in calibration, maintenance, and repair of anesthesia equipment or similar equipment, or related experience in a hospital/healthcare setting.
* To be considered as a Trainee: One (1) year of operating room experience involving direct patient care and/or equipment maintenance and calibration.
