THE POSITION

The Tourist Information Counselor position with the Department of Transportation offers a friendly and engaging way to help travelers explore Pennsylvania. This role allows you to share helpful information while creating positive experiences for visitors. You will build strong communication skills and learn more about attractions across the state. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides travelers at Welcome Centers with accurate information, helpful resources, and friendly assistance. The role supports tourism outreach, customer service, and day-to-day Welcome Center operations. As a Tourist Information Counselor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Visitor Assistance: Provide travelers with directions, lodging options, and information about attractions
  • Tourism Outreach: Support special programs, travel shows, and partnerships that promote Pennsylvania destinations
  • Center Operations: Open and close the Welcome Center, maintain displays, and keep supplies organized
  • Information Management: Prepare daily reports, track literature inventory, and handle visitor data accurately
  • Communication Support: Share updates with supervisors and assist with communications that improve operations
  • Travel Participation: Attend required meetings, tours, and travel events for training and promotional purposes

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 80 hours bi-weekly
  • This position works a 6-week rotating schedule. Days and hours can vary from Sunday to Saturday, temporary hours of operation are 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM..
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in work involving public contact; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be willing and able to work in and commute to Northampton County PennDOT Welcome Center: I-78 West: I-78 westbound, 1/2 mile west of PA/NJ border,
  • You must have front facing public contact experience.
  • You must have experience working with computers.
  • You must have experience answering phones, composing emails, compiling reports, tracking office activities and inventory, entering data, and filing.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Five or more years of full-time experience in work involving front facing public contact.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
