Position Summary

The Digital Scanning Technician I (DST I) supports the Digital Pathology team by performing foundational slide handling, preparation, tracking, and scanning support activities. This role ensures pathology glass slides are accurately processed, quality-checked, and documented to support timely digital imaging and patient care workflows. The position emphasizes accuracy, compliance, and adherence to established standard operating procedures.

Role Overview

Slide Handling & Preparation

  • Receive, sort, and handle pathology glass slides per departmental workflows
  • Prepare and label slides for digital scanning
  • Verify slide labels, accession numbers, and case information for accuracy
  • Identify and escalate physical slide issues as needed
  • Bundle, stage, and route slides for scanning workflows

Digital Scanning Support

  • Support prospective scanning workflows
  • Perform barcode scanning and tracking in LIS to maintain chain-of-custody
  • Ensure accurate tracking of slides throughout all workflow stages

Quality Control (QC)

  • Perform pre-scan slide quality checks to support optimal image quality
  • Ensure barcode and label readability for scanning
  • Conduct final quality and accuracy checks prior to case processing
  • Identify, document, and troubleshoot slide and scanner issues per SOPs

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately document activities in LIS, logs, and QC tracking tools
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of patient and specimen data entry
  • Escalate issues to senior staff or leadership as appropriate

Team & Operational Support

  • Collaborate with Digital Scanning Technicians, laboratory staff, and clinical teams
  • Participate in training, competency assessments, and cross-training activities
  • Support operational needs, including variable workflows and shift coverage

Key Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Basic computer and data entry proficiency
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and commitment to patient safety
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a healthcare, laboratory, or pathology setting
  • Interest in digital pathology or healthcare technology

Additional Information

  • Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM (onsite)
  • Includes evening and weekend shifts
  • This position may be eligible for shift differential pay due to evening hours, in accordance with MSK compensation policies.

Pay Range: $23.49 - $32.46 FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
