UNC Health is seeking an experienced nurse leader to serve as Director of Ambulatory Surgery, providing clinical and operational leadership for freestanding outpatient GI endoscopy centers.

This role partners closely with physicians, anesthesia, nursing, and executive leaders to drive quality, safety, patient experience, volume, and financial performance. Key focus areas include endoscopy throughput and scheduling optimization, accreditation and regulatory compliance (AAAHC, CMS), workforce engagement and retention, and continuous quality improvement throughout pre-, intra-, and post-procedural care.

The ideal candidate is an experienced nurse leader with strong operational and financial acumen, deep expertise in GI endoscopy and ambulatory surgery operations, and a proven ability to lead change in a complex, high-volume procedural environment.

Summary:

The Director - ASC oversees the development of strategic plans, goals and metrics for outpatient same-day surgery centers within the UNC Health Care System.

Responsibilities:
1. Oversees the development of strategic plans, goals and metrics to achieve fiscal, quality, safety, professional practice and patient experience vision.
2. Oversees the development and implementation of the fiscal and capital plans and adjusts accordingly to support the fiscal success.
3. Ensures collaboration with others throughout the organization to improve Surgical Services performance and operating efficiencies. Gathers continuous intelligence on Surgical Services performance, customer perception, industry trends and new problems and opportunities. Leads the development of action plans based on this data. Collaborates with the Medical Executive Committee, medical staff, nursing staff, other departments and/or professional groups to develop, change in people, processes and technology intelligence on Surgical Services performance, customer perception, industry trends and new problems and opportunities. Leads the development of action plans based on this data.
4. Collaborates with team to develop, implement and evaluate programs and services that support safe, quality patient care delivery and effective utilization of workforce, facilities and equipment.
5. Partners with the VP, Financial manager and clinical leaders to develop, maintain and evaluate a professional practice environment that empowers and supports staff.
6. Encourages shared decision-making, accountability and just culture. Assures the development of policies and procedures, which support evidence, based professional practice, quality, safety and regulatory agency compliance.
7. Effectively manages human resources and creates an environment conducive to staff recruitment and retention. Applies organizational policy and procedures in hiring, promoting, transferring and terminating staff. Provides staff with annual performance feedback and opportunity to set professional goals. Integrates scientific evidence regarding retention of nursing staff into unit planning.
8. Budget Management - Effectively uses clinical and financial information to establish and meet budgetary goals. Implements strategies to increase revenue and cost-effectively manage personnel, supply, and equipment resources. Evaluates the impact of strategic fiscal changes on quality outcomes.
9. Accreditation Issues - Ensures that internal and external regulatory standards or nursing practice are met or exceeded. This includes organizational policy and procedures as well as state, AAAHC, Board of Nursing and other specified accrediting bodies. Integrates current scientific evidence into standards of practice.
10. Quality Improvement-Leads and participates in quality improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety or quality of care deficits.
11. Education-Creates an educational environment conducive to student learning, staff continuing education, and orientation of new staff members. Accountable for annual competency evaluation of staff that ensures staff has the knowledge and skills to care for the specified patient population.
12. Assists perioperative personnel in verifying that appropriate personnel, equipment, and supplies are available. Verifies departmental compliance with organizational policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation standards. Provides guidance, support, and constructive feedback to perioperative personnel team members and other team members as appropriate.
13. Demonstrates effective communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders. Collects and analyzes data related to quality or performance improvement projects that apply to perioperative services.
14. Oversees management of perioperative services operationally and fiscally. Verifies that perioperative personnel provide safe and effective patient-centered care in perioperative services. Assists perioperative personnel in evaluating practice and creating strategies for further improvement.
15. Uses effective conflict resolution techniques. Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care. Evaluates perioperative personnel performance. Interviews for perioperative personnel selection.
16. Verifies that educational resources are available for perioperative services personnel and holds personnel accountable for compliance with established standards. Coordinates, facilitates, and manages change within perioperative services and the health care institution.

Education Requirements:
* Graduate of Accredited Nursing Program. Bachelor's degree (BSN) required.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Must have NC RN Licensure and BCLS, ACLS certification
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Seven (7) years nursing experience with at least three (3) years of progressive leadership experience required. Evidence of three (3) years in a hospital setting, staffing or leadership in the clinically relevant field. Must have experience with AAAHC Accreditation, CMS and NC State and Federal regulations as well as knowledge of surgery scheduling, credentialing and insurance verification.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* Understands and applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
* Responsible and accountable for the delivery of safe, effective, direct and indirect, patient-family centered care through the continuum of perioperative care to include outpatient surgery unit preoperative unit operating room post-anesthesia care unit sterile processing department and anesthesia services.
* Ability to communicate ideas and solutions in a clear, concise manner. Identifies problem areas and skill gaps proactively and addresses them appropriately. Excellent project management and change management skills for designing and implementing high priority department initiatives in a complex environment.
