Responsibilities

This position is responsible for performing whole blood collection in donor centers and mobile sites; conducts donor registration, interviews, draw, and donor care; performs regulated pre- and post-collection functions including storage and transportation of blood; promotes a positive organizational image; designated as essential during severe weather or emergency operations.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities or Activities Required by the Job

    Provide excellent customer service by acknowledging the donor, treating donors in a respectful manner, and striving to provide each donor with a positive and pleasant experience which would encourage their return.
  • Perform all aspects of whole blood collection as required.
  • Conduct donor interviews and evaluate donor suitability based on current Standard Operating Procedures and criteria.
  • Obtain and document donor hemoglobin and vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, and height).
  • Maintain confidentiality of all donor information.
  • Perform site preparation, phlebotomy, and discontinuation of whole blood procedures; monitor donor progress and respond promptly to adverse reactions; ensure collected product meets standards.
  • Perform pre- and post-draw activities including quality control, processing and packing of blood products, cleaning equipment, restocking supplies, proper handling of controlled supplies, and assisting with pre-draw setup and post-draw packing for mobile operations.
  • Works in donor centers and mobile collection sites as assigned; travels between sites as required to meet operational needs

Mobile Unit Operator Responsibilities

  • Set up and break down mobile site equipment before and after mobiles, assist in phlebotomy area with discontinuing units, filling tubes and helping with reactions.
  • Ensure all necessary equipment/supplies are placed and/or stored on the vehicle before departure.
  • Perform additional functions related to care of blood after collection including storage and transportation.
  • Must have and maintain a valid operator's license (MO Class E or KS Class C) and a clean driving record.
  • Must have and maintain Dot physical examination.
  • HEAVY LIFTING IS REQUIRED.


Qualifications

Requirement Minimum Education & Experience

Education:

High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED).

Related Experience:

Experience interacting with customers or the public in a service-oriented setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Experience in a healthcare environment and/or phlebotomy; knowledge of basic medical terminology.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's)

Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and interpret medical, technical, regulatory, and quality procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Outlook, desktop applications, and computer software systems.

Skills:

  • Cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with both individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Effective written and oral communication; strong attention to detail and organization; accurate numeric transcription.
  • Persuasive and customer service skills; cultural competency to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.

Abilities:

  • Resolve donor and customer concerns and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Work in a team environment or independently; be responsive and available to management as issues arise.
  • Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternatives and solve problems within established policies and procedures.
  • Plan and coordinate multiple workflows; monitor donor reactions and qualitative medical information as appropriate to role.
  • Valid MO Class E Driver's License or KS Class C Driver's License with excellent driving history.
  • Must have and maintain Dot physical examination.
  • WORK HOURS AND DAYS VARY SO MUST BE VERY FLEXIBLE.
