Position Summary
We are looking for a research assistant excited about translational research to join the Daniel Anderson/Robert Langer lab at the Koch Institute of Integrative Cancer Research, MIT to support research projects on developing medical devices for treating diabetes. This is a highly interdisciplinary project at the intersection of device engineering, materials science, and bioengineering; and involves multiple collaborations. The role will involve microfabrication, device assembly, in vitro prototyping, and preclinical evaluation in rodent and swine models. In addition, the person will be expected to maintain accurate laboratory records, and stock laboratory supplies. This is a great opportunity for engineers interested in gaining research experience in an interdisciplinary area combining engineering with translational research before applying for graduate/medical school. This position will be located at MIT.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs fabrication and assembly of devices (under direction) using a variety of laboratory protocols and equipment. Records results accurately and troubleshoots procedures.
  • Perform biomolecular assays (ELISA, HPLC, and others).
  • Perform work that includes microfabrication, engineering and electrical/electronic testing of device platforms.
  • Performs animal work that involves surgery, regular bleeds, blood glucose measurements, etc.
  • Keeps accurate logs of all experiments performed and communicates findings to supervisor.
  • Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials. Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I. Attends courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
  • Contributes to the teamwork within and between departments and organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biological/ Chemical/ Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or any closely related field.
Experience:
  • Previous experience with the below is highly preferred:
    • microfabrication or microfluidics
    • biomolecular assays (ELISA, HPLC, and others)
    • Animal work (surgery, bleeding, blood glucose measurements, necropsy)
  • Must be okay working with and handling rodents and small animals.
  • Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles. Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, keep accurate records of procedures in the lab and good communication skills with other team members.

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.

Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
