We are seeking an early career geoscience researcher to join our team in the Geothermal Energy and Subsurface Systems group. In this role you will be contributing to subsurface research programs focused on geothermal energy development, as well as critical minerals recovery and subsurface energy storage. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop research proposals, conduct field sampling campaigns, and execute laboratory analyses. Excellent problem-solving skills and a commitment to advancing subsurface science are essential for this role.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other researchers on field work campaigns for testing, measurement, and sampling.
  • Collaborate with other researchers to develop and implement new experimental protocols and techniques.
  • Collaborate with other researchers in writing grant proposals for external funding opportunities.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present findings at conferences and workshops.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Possess strong oral and written English communication skills.
  • Possess strong research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools, software, and computing resources necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, guidelines, and rules, as well as document work that has been performed.

Required:

  • Level 2: Bachelor's of Science degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution and 2 years of experience OR MS or PhD in geology/geochemistry/hydrogeology, civil engineering, or related field from an accredited institution and 0 years of experience.
  • Background in petrology, geochemical cycles, or geochemistry.
  • Relevant experience determined with the level.
  • Must have excellent English verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Individuals must be willing to perform work under varying and diverse environmental conditions.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Background in geothermal energy, subsurface solid-liquid systems
  • Hands-on experience collecting rock/fluid/gas field samples
  • Experience designing and implementing geoscience experiments
  • Strong publication record in high impact journals
  • Experience writing competitive research proposals

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee may be required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or bend, in an office, laboratory, or field environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to use a keyboard and mouse/trackball, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job may require operation of job-related laboratory and field equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
