Purpose of the Position

The Operations Manager is responsible for supporting/leading the safe, efficient and cost-effective operation of the Coolbaugh LaserGas Electronics and Specialty Gas production facility. The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring that the facility is operated in compliance with all Messer internal requirements as well supporting adherence to government regulations. It is expected that the Operations Manager will build, develop and manage a high-performanceteam with a focus on safety, quality and continuous improvement to support Messer's overall business structure while meeting customer needs. To meet these needs, the Operations Manager will oversee all the operations and process technicians of the Inert Gas, Reactive Gas and H2 Gas filling departments, Kr/Xe Purification Systems, Neon Purification Systems, Cylinder Asset Building operation, the Blowdown / Passivation department, and all related high pressure pure source material systems.

Principal Responsibilities



  • Responsible for safe, reliable and successful operation of plant processes
  • Manage and develop a team of direct reports to achieve individual and organizational goals
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and performance management for direct reports
  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, goal setting, and performance reviews for direct reports
  • Supervise and manage multiple departments, lead technicians and the production staff
  • Lead, motivate and manage production personnel; oversee all production activities (physical and administrative); coordinate work transfer efficiently and effectively with other plant departments
  • Operate as primary Production Planner-responsible for the scheduling of production work orders: to ensure on-time shipments; maximize efficient use of material, staffing, and system capacity. Review and optimize product lead-time and cycle-time to develop goals and meet key metrics
  • Drive Safety initiatives (Golden Rules, Safer Together, etc.)
  • Provide technical assistance to Production Technicians and Leads
  • Provide technical and order status update information to Plant Manager, Sales, Commercial, and Customer Service teams
  • Assist in the development and improvement of production methods
  • Participate in development of new and modified production processes in conjunction with the Plant Engineering and Maintenance team
  • Interface effectively with Commercial Development, Corporate Engineering, Plant Management, Engineering, Safety and Quality Team members regarding production, safety, and quality concerns or issues
  • Stay current on developments related to production processes and government regulations effecting the product line and the production process
  • Work with Inventory manager, Maintenance manager, and Procurement manager roles to purchase department supplies and inventory items necessary for operational excellence
  • Manage supplies for production department and assure on time delivery to prevent shortage of needed packaging labeling and administrative materials
  • Responsible owner of Raw Source Material inventory as directed by Engineering Manager, Plant Manager
  • Adhere to all company policies, safety, and standard operating procedures-report promptly to Plant Management any fill technicians not in compliance
  • Provide meaningful quality metrics. Prepare and present metrics to upper management
  • Oversee all current production equipment including preventive maintenance, repairs and purchase of new equipment
  • Adhere to all company policies, safety, and standard operating procedures-report promptly to Plant Management any fill technicians not in compliance
  • Achieve proficiency in all filling and system operational tasks as part of the plant's training and qualification program within 2 years of hire date
  • Operate fill systems when necessary to maximize capacity usage to cover vacation and other staffing gaps
  • Troubleshoot systems and report to Engineering and Maintenance firsthand observations and conclusions
  • Attend daily and weekly scheduled production meetings as directed by the Plant Manager
  • Hold daily safety talks, formal or informal, to keep fill teams focused and prevent complacency
  • Provide meaningful feedback on Production Tech performance via HR supervisory processes and support growth objectives of both the company and individual
  • Participate in HazOp, MOC, Risk Assessment, Customer Complaint investigations, Root Cause analyses, as needed and as directed by the Plant Manager in conjunction with the Engineering Manager and Quality Team's needs
  • Provide Leadership to all site production personnel
  • Proactively identify risks to safety and quality: communicate promptly to Plant management Drive to Completion mitigation actions and process improvements
  • Support Customer and ISO audits as needed and as directed including answering tour and procedural questions professionally and confidently
  • Perform other operational and customer support duties as assigned by the Plant Manager


Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering related field
  • Minimum 3 years operational supervisory management experience
  • Minimum 7 years of professional, technical or mechanical operations experience
