Overview

LMI is seeking an experiencedEmbedded Systems Engineerwith a minimum of an active SECRET clearance and at least 3 years of demonstrated experience to support the United States Army. This role focuses on the design, development, and integration of low-level software and firmware for tactical hardware and sensor systems. You will work directly with US Army mission partners to bridge the gap between physical hardware and cloud-based digital solutions for the Warfighter.

The ideal candidate is adept at programming for resource-constrained environments, with a strong understanding ofReal-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), hardware abstraction layers, and secure firmware development. You should be comfortable working at the intersection of hardware and software, collaborating closely with platform engineers to integrate edge devices into broaderDevSecOps pipelinesand cloud-native architectures.

Responsibilities

    Firmware Development:Design, develop, and maintain low-level software and firmware for embedded processors (ARM, AVR, RISC-V).
  • Hardware Integration:Ensure new embedded systems function smoothly across tactical programs, integrating sensors, radios, and peripherals with mobile and cloud systems.
  • Edge Optimization:Optimize code for power consumption, memory usage, and processing efficiency on smartphones, tablets, and custom EUDs.
  • Automated Testing:Automate hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and firmware deployment processes within a CI/CD framework.
  • System Reliability:Maintain the underlying embedded architecture to ensure reliability and security in disconnected or contested environments.
  • Driver Development:Write and update device drivers for communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and USB.
  • Security Implementation:Apply secure coding practices to firmware to protect against hardware-level vulnerabilities and ensure data-at-rest encryption.
  • Debugging:Use logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG/SWD debuggers to troubleshoot complex hardware-software interactions.


Qualifications

  • Clearance:Minimum of an activeSECRETclearance.
  • Education:Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience:Minimum of 3-years of experience in embedded software design, development, and hardware-software integration.
  • Government Experience:Previous government technology experience, specifically with tactical hardware or PEO-led programs.
  • Programming:Expertise inC and C++for embedded systems; familiarity with Python for scripting and automation.
  • RTOS & Kernel:Experience withFreeRTOS, VxWorks, or Embedded Linux(Yocto/Buildroot).
  • Hardware Proficiency:Strong familiarity with microcontrollers, SoCs, and FPGA soft-cores.
  • Automation:Experience usingGitLabfor CI/CD and automated firmware build environments.
  • Linux Toolsets:Strong familiarity with Linux for cross-compilation and network-related troubleshooting.
  • Security:DoD 8570 IAT Level II Certification (Security+ or equivalent).
  • Agile:Experience working with Agile teams to deliver iterative hardware/software increments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • Knowledge ofArmy PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing)or electronic warfare systems.
  • Experience withDockerfor containerized embedded build environments.
  • Familiarity withBus protocols(CAN, MIL-STD-1553) and tactical data links.
  • Experience withAndroid NDK(Native Development Kit) for high-performance mobile integration.

Target salary range:
