Brachytherapy nurses play a crucial role in managing patient care across the treatment continuum, focusing on safety, education, and symptom management. Responsibilities include providing pre-operative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, managing radiation safety protocols, assessing pain, ensuring proper device placement, and coordinating care to avoid treatment delays.

Key Responsibilities and Nursing Considerations
*Radiation Safety & Protection: Principles, Protection & Care Management
*Pre-Procedure Responsibilities: Education: Explain the procedure, potential side effects (e.g., skin reactions, fatigue), and safety precautions.
Assessment: Screen for pre-anesthesia, medication management (e.g., anticoagulants), and overall readiness. Preparation: Ensure informed consent is signed and pre-operative checklists are complete.
*Intraoperative/Procedure Support: Assistance: Aid in the placement of applicators and radioactive sources, often under sedation. Equipment: Manage sterile equipment, including catheters and imaging devices.
*Post-Procedure & Inpatient Care: Monitoring: Assess for pain, infection, and potential device migration. Skin Care: Inspect skin in the treatment area for damage, avoiding lotions or powders. Dietary: Implement low-residue diets for gynecological patients to manage bowel movements. Psychosocial Support: Provide emotional support, as the treatment can be overwhelming.
*Coordination & Navigation: Scheduling: Coordinate with radiation oncologists, physicists, and dosimetrists to ensure timely, high-quality care, ideally finishing treatment within designated timeframes.

Scope of Work

The clinical nurse, under the ANA scope of practice utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles. The Clinical Nurse provides quality patient care under the direction of the Nursing and Operational Leadership according to Beaumont policies and procedures within an ambulatory setting.
Qualifications
  • Required Associate's Degree or equivalent Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an associate's degree or equivalent.
  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree B.S.N, or M.S.N, or DNP/PhD - if not minimum BSN prepared, new graduate/nurse with less than one (1) year experience is required to enroll in an accredited BSN program within one (1) year of licensure date and complete within five (5) years. This is effective April 18, 2023.
  • 2 years of relevant experience acute care nursing experience Required
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required Or
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association department specific Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Specialty Certification - UNKNOWN Unknown department specialty Upon Hire preferred
