Hanson is seeking candidates for our Traffic Engineering 2026 Internship programs. We have potential opportunities in the following locations Indianapolis, IN, Lisle, IL, Peoria, IL. Springfield, IL St. Charles, MO, Austin, TX.

Our Traffic Engineering discipline is made up of Civil Engineers who collect and analyze traffic and safety data for use in a variety of traffic engineering studies on projects of all sizes. Studies often include proposed traffic distribution for future conditions, origin/destination studies, travel demand modeling, microsimulation, examination of crash data, predictions of anticipated crash frequency using the Highway Safety Manual (HSM), traffic impact studies, traffic operations studies, traffic signal warrants, traffic analysis for maintenance of traffic phasing, pedestrian and bicycle safety studies, intersection/interchange design studies, and noise analysis. In addition to studies, traffic engineers prepare construction plans and specifications for traffic signals, traffic signal interconnect, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), signing and pavement marking, passive and active pedestrian warning devices, and traditional and innovative intersection geometric design. Work typically involves various software packages, including Highway Capacity Software (HCS), SYNCHRO/SimTraffic (for traffic signals), SIDRA (for roundabouts), VISSIM, VISUM, CUBE Voyager, MicroStation, AutoCAD and GIS.

General Assignments: Interns will perform routine traffic engineering tasks using standard procedures under supervision of Registered Professional Engineers and may assist Hanson engineers, designers and technicians in disciplines related to their field of study.

Interns will typically support one or more experienced Professional Engineers in performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of traffic engineering. Interns may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the Hanson community and with fellow interns. Internships may require travel to suppliers, customers, or other Hanson locations.

Key Responsibilities: Traffic Engineering interns will be expected to perform the following key responsibilities with assistance from a Hanson Professional Engineer:

  • Preparing plans, designs, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Gathering and/or providing data for the preparation of engineering or environmental reports and studies
  • Performing and/or reviewing calculations or reports such as those related to surveying, transportation engineering, soil capacities and quantities
  • Utilize engineering software packages such as MicroStation and Openroads Designer
  • Conducting field investigations and/or survey assistance to gather information
  • Documenting and/or observing construction operations
  • Performing related duties such as writing memoranda, letters, or general reports; collecting and correlating engineering data; maintaining records; attending meetings; and operating technical equipment

Qualifications:

Intern must be actively enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Planning, or relevant field of study. The ideal candidate will have successfully completed their sophomore year by the time of their internship and be actively enrolled in an accredited 4-year college or university.
