About the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the United States. Almost 2,600 students are enrolled in the School's graduate and undergraduate programs, and in the last academic year, 801 degrees were awarded. All ECE undergraduate and graduate programs are in the top five of the most recent college rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

In addition to the main campus in Atlanta, Georgia, ECE also has permanent operations at Georgia Tech-Lorraine in France and Georgia Tech-Shenzhen in China. Graduate students who spend at least one semester each at three Georgia Tech locations (Atlanta, Lorraine, and Shenzhen on three continents (North America, Europe, and Asia) can earn the Georgia Tech Global Engineering Immersion Program (GEIP) Certificate when they receive the Georgia Tech M.S. degree

Job Summary

Manage accounting/financial operations at the School level or serve as the second level of accounting/finance management within a large unit. Functions overseen usually include budgeting, financial analysis, maintaining financial records and preparation of financial reports and statements. May also supervise additional administrative related functions. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing performance, providing feedback, and making pay recommendations. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: School Chair and faculty or unit management and finance head, subordinate staff, Administration and Finance management and staff. This position typically will advise and counsel: School administration or unit management, subordinate staff. This position will supervise: accounting staff.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Oversee preparation and consolidation of school or unit budgets consistent with Institute policy; administer budget amendment process.

Job Duty 2 -
Supervise the proper recording of financial transactions.

Job Duty 3 -
Direct the preparation of financial reports and statements on both a regular scheduled and ad hoc basis.

Job Duty 4 -
Advise management regarding the school or unit's financial status; make recommendations as appropriate.

Job Duty 5 -
May supervise school unit administrative functions such as human resources, purchasing, etc.

Job Duty 6 -
Plan and direct subordinate work activities; evaluate, document and provide feedback relative to individual performance.

Job Duty 7 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or equivalent combination of education and experience

Other Required Qualifications
Position must work well with others and defuse potential conflicts. A proven track record of delivering quality work on time and within budget is also essential. An ability to innovate and solve new problems is desired.

Required Experience
Six to eight years of job related experience

SKILLS
This job requires knowledge of accounting principles and practices as applied within a university academic, research or business unit. Also included are skills in use of related computer applications as well as supervisory, communications and analytical skills.

Other Information

The Assistant Director for Financial Operations is a key part of the Operations leadership team within the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering. We are seeking driven, dedicated, and creative applicants with a proven track record of leadership and innovation. Below are some of the key responsibilities of the position:

  • Manages and trains the accounting & finance team. Responsible for managing workload and filling vacancies
  • Ensures accounts are reconciled regularly and consistently. Expected to be an expert in managing all sources of funds including state, local , Foundation, and sponsored.
  • Monitors sub-awards to ensure proper set-up and close-out. Works with the Associate Director for Research Ops to resolve issues.
  • Signs off on all cost transfer justifications for the school.
  • Tracks and manages start-up budget & commitments. Tracks faculty buy-outs, research effort, and manages faculty-line budgets
  • Works with the Director for Operations to prepare the annual budget and supplemental budget requests.
  • Maintains a standard report of the school's discretionary accounts
  • Works with the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs to set and track the annual GTA allocation and fellowships. Ensures that Graduate Assistants are appointed timely and appropriately
  • Maintains accounts in workday, requests new accounts as needed
  • Liaison with the Controller's Office, Procurement, Budget, Grants & Contracts, and other applicable central offices.
  • Ensures that all Annual Statements of Reasonableness are completed on time
  • Tracks & monitors endowed chair and professorship holders and balances
