Based on a specific area of expertise, provides advice and guidance relative to safety-related federal, state and local regulations. Provides input into the development of policies and procedures relating to new and/or changing regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Promotes a "Safety Above All" culture.

  • Advises and provides responses to complex, high-level questions regarding a specific area of expertise; provides input to company strategy as well as policy and procedure development relative to new and/or changing safety regulations.

  • Provides practical application in a particular regulatory area, such as: CSA/DOT, FAA/IATA, OSHA, and HazMat.

  • Provides expert-level knowledge regarding deliverables to improve safety performance. Uses subject matter expertise to develop targeted solutions that positively impact safety results.

  • Remains current on regulatory and industry trends and incorporates that knowledge into requirements and recommendations

  • Establishes and maintains cross-functional relationships in support of safety initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree in Safety, Logistics, Engineering, Business Management or related fields required; Master's degree preferred. In addition to minimum experience, high school diploma or GED and four (4) years' related experience is accepted in lieu of degree.

Minimum Experience

Seven (7) years in Environmental Health, Logistics/Transportation, Safety or related field.

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Advisor: In addition to minimum education and experience, OSHA professional and/or OSHA certification preferred.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) Advisor: In addition to minimum education and experience, transportation safety background and/or DOT Compliance Certification preferred.
  • International Air Transport Associate (IATA) or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisor: In addition to minimum education and experience, transportation safety background and/or Certified Safety Inspector preferred.
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Advisor: In addition to minimum education and experience, Certified HAZMAT Manager designation preferred.
  • Professional designation in one or more of the following preferred: Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and/or Certified Director of Safety (CDS).

  • Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and industry trends related to industrial/occupational safety.

  • Software skills, including use of Microsoft Office and web-based applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Presentation skills necessary to facilitate training and/or deliver informational sessions to group and/or individuals. Verbal and written communication skills necessary to explain complex and/or confidential information. Time management and organizational skills necessary to manage multiple projects, appropriately prioritize workload, plan for resources to meet deadlines and goals, and respond to day-to-day functional needs. Demonstrated ability to build professional rapport, and positively influence diverse groups.

Job Conditions

Substantial travel will be required.

Preferred Qualifications: Hazardous Materials Advisor working with the Surface Operations. Understanding of Department of Transportation 49cfr hazardous materials regulations. Operational experience in a nonbulk carrier network. Familiarity with developing and publishing; operation procedures, job aids, and training. Comfortable interacting with customer in a one-on-one setting. Experience with hazardous materials spill cleanup, PPE and required supplies.
