Under supervision of the Large Animal Manager provide technical support for the LAC and Ambulatory services. Receive, handle, lead, lunge & restrain patients. Patients are primarily equines, but may include llamas, alpacas & other large domestic farm animals. Lead horses while jogging/walking for gait evaluation. Perform aseptic preparation of joints & areas for local nerve blocks or joint injections. Place IV catheters, collect samples & perform diagnostic testing, administer medical treatments, monitor patients, maintain accurate medical records & capture and document charges. Maintain supplies & equipment, restock service trucks, clean & disinfect work areas & equipment. Perform all duties in a way that does not result in actual or potential exposure of patients or personnel to infectious disease agents. Instruct students.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No minimum educational requirement.
  • Experience handling, restraining, and working with horses (healthy, sick, sedated, fractious) of all types and temperaments to ensure safety and effectiveness & anticipate potential problem horses & dangerous situations.
  • Experience working with other livestock (ex: cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, and camelids).
  • Experience with medications, drugs, and fluids commonly used in horses and livestock and performing mathematical calculations to calculate doses.
  • Experience with equine and livestock, husbandry, anatomy, behavior, and basic physiology to identify and describe abnormal physical signs and appearances.
  • Experience monitoring patient vital signs and administering PO, IV, SQ, and IM medications.
  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, veterinarians, students and staff.
  • Skill to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals and using problem solving skills and work effectively to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects while maintaining a high level of productivity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS), following VMTH patient care SOP's, safety and Infectious Disease Control protocols.
  • Experience with all aspects of endoscopic procedures set up, use, sample collection, image capture, processing/disinfection etc.
  • Experience providing treatments on patients with life threatening illness or injury based upon clinician's orders, and ability to provide technical assistance to clinician during life threatening situations including skill to perform CPR on neonatal large animal patients.

Department Overview

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Working hours are subject to change and include days, swing, grave, weekdays, weekends, holidays and academic vacations. Work variable hours, some on call hours & occasional overtime, occasional weekends & holidays to meet operational needs. If scheduled on call", must be able to report to work within 45 minutes following call. Willingness to routinely assist veterinarian with euthanasia. May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including boots, gowns, lab coats, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers. Requires working with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gaseous anesthetics, radioactive patients, infectious and zoonotic diseases, and distraught clients. Work in crowded areas where strong odors are present, where exposure to bodily fluids & waste from domestic farm animals will occur and handle potentially infectious biological specimens. May hold horses for radiology, undergoing MRl's and Nuclear scintigraphy. Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions. Work with new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities as they are developed and implemented. Work in other VMTH areas as needed. No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment or procedure rooms and some other areas of the hospital.
