Job Summary:

ThePrincipal Cloud DataOps Engineeris a strategic technical leader responsible for architecting and evolving enterprise-scale cloud infrastructure and DataOps practices on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to support data and analytics, DataCore strategic data initiatives. This role plays a critical part in enabling data-driven innovation across the organization by ensuring robust, secure, and scalable data and Artificial Intelligence, machine learning AI/ML operations.

As a senior member of the Data & Analytics' Data Core organization, the Principal Engineer leads cross-functional initiatives, mentors' technical teams, and influences cloud strategy and architecture. The role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong interpersonal skills to drive collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence across data engineering, analytics, and AI/ML Ops domains.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as a technical thought leader and strategic advisor in cloud data infrastructure and operations.
  • Partner with senior stakeholders across Data & Analytics, Network Technology & Operations, and business units to align cloud strategy with organizational goals.
  • Mentor and guide senior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and accountability.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in delivering complex, high-impact data and AI/ML Ops initiatives.

Cloud Infrastructure & DataOps Engineering

  • Architect and implement scalable, secure, and resilient cloud infrastructure using GCP services and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • Define and promote best practices for CI/CD, observability, automation, and cloud-native development.
  • Design and support robust ETL/ELT pipelines using Python, SQL, and GCP-native tools, ensuring high availability and performance.

AI/MLOps Enablement

  • Collaborate with data scientists and AI/ML engineers to operationalize machine learning workflows.
  • Implement and manage AI/ML Ops pipelines for model training, deployment, monitoring, and governance.
  • Ensure reproducibility, scalability, and compliance of AI/ML models in production environments.

Data Privacy, Security & Governance

  • Lead implementation of advanced data protection mechanisms including masking, encryption, and de-identification.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, PII, and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Integrate data governance and quality tools (e.g., Informatica, Bigeye, Dataplex) into cloud workflows.

Performance Optimization & Reliability

  • Analyze and optimize infrastructure and pipeline performance, identifying bottlenecks and implementing scalable solutions.
  • Establish and maintain monitoring, alerting, and incident response protocols for critical data systems.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent experience
  • 8+ yearsof progressive experience in Cloud DataOps, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering roles, with a strong focus on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or equivalent cloud platforms
  • Proven experience leading large-scale cloud infrastructure and data platform initiatives, including cross-functional collaboration and strategic alignment
  • Deep expertise in CI/CD, IaC (Terraform), container orchestration (Kubernetes, GKE), and cloud-native data services
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL; familiarity with Java or JavaScript is a plus
  • Extensive experience with data warehousing (BigQuery), NoSQL (BigTable), and relational databases (AlloyDB)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data privacy, security, and compliance in healthcare or regulated industries (e.g., HIPAA, PII).
  • Experience implementing and managing MLOps pipelines and tools, including model deployment, monitoring and governance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Data Engineering, or related field
  • Google Cloud certifications (e.g., Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, Professional Data Engineer)
  • Experience with healthcare data standards and e-prescribing systems
  • Expertise in Apache Airflow, and data observability platforms
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau)
  • Strong understanding of cloud security architecture and best practices

At Surescripts, base pay is one part of our Total Rewards Package (which may also include bonus, benefits etc.) and is determined within a range. The base pay range for this position is $164,300 - $200,800 per year. Your base pay may vary within or outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including (but not limited to) your qualifications, skills, experience, and location.
