Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Classroom Assistant for the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Assists the certified special education teacher in providing educational and behavioral programming for students with developmental disabilities at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center - School Program.
  • Works with active students within a one-to-one or small group (2-4 students) format in a crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents and staff moving about.
  • Supports classrooms of students with severe behavior challenges; a greater percentage of work time will be spent implementing crisis management techniques including defensive techniques in response to punches, kicks, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining the educational and behavioral records on student progress kept in each students designated notebook, under direct supervision of, or direction from a certified Special Education Teacher.

Salary Details $17.83/hourly

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Ability to use specialized instructional and/or record-keeping instruments.
  • Ability to work with children and/or young adults with autism or other special needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, have

Preferred Qualifications

  • In accordance with state mandated requirements, a Mantoux test will be administered to successful applicants to verify the absence of tuberculosis. In addition, the successful applicant, at the cost of the university, will be required to be inoculated against Hepatitis B, unless the successful applicant waives this vaccination in writing.
