Position Overview

The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.

Position Summary

Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso seeks a full-time Science Faculty member with expertise in Biology and/or Chemistry. The position is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in both in-person and online formats, promoting student success, and contributing to the development and continuous improvement of the college's science programs. A consistent on-campus presence is required to support instruction, student engagement, and program coordination.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach a full load (15 credit hours) of Biology and/or Chemistry courses each semester, in both live and online formats.
  • Maintain 10 on-campus office hours per week for student support, advising, and mentoring.
  • Develop and update curricula, lesson plans, and course materials that align with program outcomes and institutional learning objectives.
  • Integrate science concepts and skills across disciplines, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Assess, evaluate, and document student mastery of learning outcomes and competencies.
  • Maintain required professional and academic credentials and complete Quality Matters (QM) training; ensure online courses meet QM standards and guidelines.
  • Participate in program and institutional assessment activities, including the collection and analysis of student learning data for improvement planning.
  • Oversee laboratory preparation and safety procedures, ensuring compliance with college safety policies and emergency protocols.
  • Use required instructional and administrative tools, including DropGuard, learning management systems, and college reporting platforms, to support retention, grade entry, and course documentation.
  • Participate in department and campus meetings, committee work, and institutional initiatives.
  • Engage in student recruitment, retention, and outreach efforts.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, colleagues, and the community, and demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the college.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Biology or Chemistry from a regionally accredited university.
  • Two years recent full-time employment teaching at an accredited post-secondary institution, OR a combination of current full-time discipline-related employment and instruction at an accredited post-secondary institution, OR equivalent secondary teaching experience in the discipline.

Preferred:

  • Community College experience teaching and relating to students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Post-secondary supervisory experience
  • Online teaching and online course development experience, preferably with Quality Matters framework and certification
  • Use of a variety of multi-media and classroom technologies
  • Experience developing curricula, measuring achievement of student learning objectives, evaluating course efficacy, and assessing and improving student learning
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills working with students, colleagues, staff, supervisors, and the community
  • Endorsement of the community college teaching philosophy that supports the goal of success for all students through active learning experiences and engagement
  • Understanding of rural communities and students.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide vision and leadership for departmental programs, student learning initiatives, and student completion efforts.
  • Strong commitment to ensuring that instruction is progressive, innovative, high-quality, and consistent with the mission, goals, and objectives of the college.
  • Excellent communication skills to maintain effective collaboration with the Department Chair and to ensure timely updates on departmental activities.
  • Ability to serve as an active and engaged member of the Academic Council, contributing to institutional planning and decision-making.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with departmental faculty and staff regarding departmental, campus, community, state, or federal issues that may affect operations.
  • Skill in advising and assisting students pursuing degrees or certificates within the department, including providing appropriate guidance in course selection and academic planning.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

Work is performed during normal work hours, with some evenings and weekends to meet deadlines. Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
