George Mason University's College of Public Health prepares students to become leaders and shape the public's health through academic excellence, professional service, and innovative practice and research initiatives. CPH has five academic units which enroll more than 3,000 students in its nationally-recognized offerings, including: 5 undergraduate degrees, 13 graduate degrees, and 7 certificate programs.
About the Position:
The Master of Public Health (MPH) Practicum Coordinator serves as the instructor of record for two practicum courses. In the first, the Coordinator supports students in assessing career readiness, developing applications, and securing approved practicum placements. In the second, the Coordinator monitors student progress and gathers feedback from site supervisors. Beyond student support, the Coordinator identifies, evaluates, and develops practicum sites and supervisors, serving as the university's liaison with these partners. The role also involves maintaining documentation for CEPH accreditation and collaborating with MPH program leadership and faculty.
Responsibilities:
- Serves as the primary liaison among students, the MPH student coordinator, and practicum site supervisors;
- Serves as the instructor of record for GCH 780 (practicum seminar) and GCH 790 (practicum experience) fall, spring, and summer terms;
- Guides students in identifying practicum opportunities aligned with their career goals;
- Delivers orientations, workshops, and resources to prepare students for the practicum;
- Monitors student progress and assesses practicum outcomes;
- Collaborates with faculty and staff to integrate practicum experiences into the MPH curriculum;
- Builds and maintains strategic partnerships with public health agencies, healthcare systems, and private sector organizations to support diverse and high-quality practicum opportunities. This includes engaging with stakeholders to identify emerging practicum needs, fostering long-term collaborations, and ensuring alignment between organizational goals and student learning objectives;
- Coordinates all aspects of the MPH practicum program, including overseeing student placement processes, cultivating and maintaining relationships with practicum sites, and implementing evaluation mechanisms to assess both student performance and site effectiveness;
- Collaborates with faculty and community partners to ensure practicum experiences align with academic goals and public health competencies;
- Ensures compliance with CEPH accreditation standards for applied practice experiences;
- Maintains accurate records and supports program reporting and continuous quality improvement;
- Contributes to updates to the program's website and student handbook;
- Represents the college on university committees related to experiential learning and practice;
- Fosters a positive and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, and partners;
- Participates in commencements and degree celebration events; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in public health (MPH, MSPH, PhD, DrPH) from a CEPH-accredited program or a graduate degree in a closely related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Applicants with only a master's degree must have a minimum of 3 years of public health experience;
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders;
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision; and
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in a related field;
- Experience with experiential learning coordination or field placements;
- Experience with CEPH accreditation standards and MPH program requirements;
- Experience in higher education or public health program administration;
- Experience in leadership, communication, and program development skills;
- Experience teaching public health, preferably in an online or hybrid format;
- Experience with data management systems and educational technology; and
- Understanding of contracts and MOUs.
