North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Physical and Life Sciences Directorate is looking for a Engineer to work within the Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF) to provide expertise in control systems, pulsed power systems, and laser operations. The successful candidate will mentor and transfer knowledge to Jupiter Laser Facility staff. With minimal supervision, the successful candidate will report to the JLF Operations Manager and work with lasers and high-voltage electronics. The successful candidate will work alongside scientists, control engineers, mechanical, electrical, and laser technicians.
Essential Duties
- Keep lasers and control systems running to design and implement new capabilities.
- Train and mentor current staff on all details of the JLF pulsed-power and controls systems to make improvements to efficiency and reliability of the laser.
- Design and construct high-voltage MJ-class pulsed-power systems.
- Work alongside peers to complete written safety procedures; teach staff how to use, troubleshoot, and modify JLF Programmable Logic Controllers.
- Collaborate with staff to complete JLF Controls objectives.
- Troubleshoot and fix issues that prevent laser shots to improve controls systems.
- Implement new controls functions without interfering with laser shot operations.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Minimum of ten years of experience working with high-voltage pulsed-power systems, laser safety systems and laser control systems.
- Hold expert level expertise on the design and construct high-voltage MJ-class pulsed-power system.
- High-level understanding of laser components and diagnostics, controls system architecture and how all the functions interfaces.
- Ability to interface and write controls and data acquisition software for motion hardware, vacuum systems, oscilloscopes, adaptive optics systems, spectrometers, cameras, power supplies, and the Greenfield timing system.
- Background in troubleshooting control systems with a strong level of attention to detail in implementation.
- Writing electrical documentation designed to instruct peers on how to troubleshoot all aspects of JLF controls and pulsed-power systems.
- Strong background working with programs such as, Labview, MATLAB, Excel, and PLC programming.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
