The Position

The Senior Mechanic plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates the repair, and preventative maintenance of District owned Fleet assets. These assets include automobiles and light trucks, medium and heavy trucks, construction equipment, utility tractors, various types of trailers, portable pumps and generators. The Senior Mechanic is responsible for ensuring that planned and emergency field, shop, and remote site services/repairs are prioritized, scheduled, and coordinated with client departments and assigned to the appropriate shop or remotely located mechanic. The Senior Mechanic appraises the work of approximately nine team members.

Typical tasks include:

*Estimating labor, parts and material costs to complete repairs; contacting vendor representatives to order parts and arrange for service, coordinating special work or scheduling needs with service requestors or outside repair facilities.

*Scheduling jobs, assigning work and setting priorities for staff based upon established section programs and goals identified by next level supervisor, considering urgency and operational impact to clients.

*Preparing and inputting preventive maintenance and repair service orders into the Equipment Maintenance system; producing reports on workload scheduled (in-progress and completed); maintaining accurate records of labor, material usage and repair costs.

*Evaluating the effectiveness with which assignments are completed and implementing corrective action; maintaining adequate work standards; resolving problems at the work site; recommending and implementing work process improvements for the preventive maintenance program as needed.

*Determining improvements required on heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment, and overseeing modifications, fabrication and installation of specialized parts; recommending replacement of vehicles or equipment.

*Identifying training requirements; assisting in scheduling training to teach mechanics and workers the proper work methods used in vehicle and construction equipment repair and preventive maintenance; ensuring that employees are trained in and use safe work practices in conformance with Cal/OSHA regulations and applicable regulatory standards and techniques.

*Scheduling and attending meetings and training related to fleet operation and customer service.

*Coaching, monitoring and providing oral and written recognition of work accomplishments and skill development of assigned staff; recommending approval or denial of short-term leave requests; participating in hiring interviews and making hiring recommendations.

*Preparing written performance plans using pre-established guidelines; preparing and conducting performance appraisals for assigned direct reports; counseling employees (orally and in writing) to confirm standards and/or to correct performance, behavior on the job or violations of work rules, EBMUD policies and procedures.

*Reporting instances of poor performance or inappropriate work behavior to appropriate supervisor in situations that may warrant more serious action than a counseling memo.

*Assisting mechanics and workers in diagnosing difficult mechanical issues including but not limited to the repair of automobiles and light trucks, medium and heavy trucks, construction equipment, utility tractors, various types of trailers, portable pumps and generators and related hydraulic, emissions, and mechanical systems.

*Interpret diagrams and specifications; inspecting work in progress; performing mechanical repair and preventive maintenance on a variety of Fleet maintained assets.

The salary range is $10,793 per month increasing to $11,333, $11,900, and $12,495 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1.A high school diploma, or its equivalent AND:

2.Two years of experience at the journey-level comparable to or higher than EBMUD's Automotive Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Mechanic classifications.

3.Must possess or obtain within six months of appointment, a valid unrestricted Class A California driver's license with endorsements for hazardous material and tanker.

4.Must have a satisfactory driving record.

5.Candidates must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class including sufficient agility to work in tight or confined situations, and sufficient strength to handle heavy replacement parts, weighing up to 80 pounds, with appropriate equipment.

6.Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and work overtime as needed.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, September 5, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to a panel interview tentatively scheduled for late September/early October 2025.

4.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

5.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

6.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
