Description

Summary: The Boiler Operator maintains and operates boilers and mechanical equipment in the boiler plant.

The schedule for this position is mostly second shift and weekends.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with all of the following trade duties: Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical, and Heating Plant.
  • Maintains all School-owned tools used in employees' daily service.
  • Cleans machines, tools, and equipment to ensure a clean and safe working environment. Performs other routine duties.
  • Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
  • Records data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumption, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases, voltage load, and generator balance.
  • Adjust manual controls or override automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment, or shut down equipment.
  • Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or needs for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
  • Maintains equipment; tightens fittings, repacks bearings, replaces packing glands, gaskets valves, recorders, and gauges, and cleans/replaces burners and other components.
  • Performs water titration tests and pours chemical additives, such as water softener, into the treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and to clean boiler lines.
  • Records operation and maintenance actions taken during the shift in the operator's logbook.

Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be available to work various shifts.
  • Must have a Black Seal License at a minimum.
  • High School Diploma or GED; one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  1. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  2. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. Operate large Valves (up to 24") on steam distribution systems both in the plant and in underground steam vaults. Both hands and/or wrenches often required to perform this process.
  3. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
  4. Required to stand, talk, hear, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, or balance.
