GENERAL SUMMARY: Assists the Laboratory leadership in managing staff and daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory, including the Reference Laboratory, Essential Services Laboratory, Physician Office Laboratories and Patient Service Centers. Oversees technical staff and operations to ensure the highest quality of service to patients and clinicians. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Supports the vision and goals of Bryan Medical Center (BMC) and adheres to established best practices (AIDET, Rounding, thank you notes, 5/10 Rule, etc.). 3. *Works collaboratively with the assistant managers to ensure that meaningful leader/employee rounding is completed according to span of control expectations. 4. *Responsible for the recruitment, selection, orientation, supervision, coaching, mentoring, retention and evaluation of assigned staff; implements cross-training of duties as needed; coordinates training for all non-technical staff members. 5. *Develops, implements, and analyzes adherence to organizational and service/department specific standards of care and policies and procedures. 6. *Conducts timely staff performance appraisals ensuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development. 7. Ensures adequate staff scheduling within the department to ensure quality patient care and meet productivity benchmarks. 8. Maintains productivity benchmarks and looks for continuous improvement in operations and utilization of resources. 9. *Coordinates all phases of orientation and training, including technical compliance and safety in accordance with all regulatory requirements for team members and students. 10. *Develops, implements, and analyzes adherence to organizational and service/department specific standards of care and policies and procedures. 11. Accountable for quality of patient care, physician satisfaction and employee satisfaction; facilitates a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach to interdepartmental problem solving. 12. *Promotes interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration to optimize efficient and effective patient-centered care delivery. 13. *Ensures courteous, knowledgeable service to patients, staff, and visitors; continually updates and educates staff on appropriate patient care, client service and laboratory issues. 14. Collaborates with laboratory leadership to resolve management and operational issues. 15. *Ensures technical staff compliance for all BMC facilities with all hospital, state, and federal regulations, including but not limited to: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB). 16. *Supports coordination, preparation, and participation in inspections for all facilities. 17. *Serves as Laboratory Director and Technical Consultant for clients with CLIA Waived and Moderate Complexity testing onsite, ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, including appropriate Certification for level of testing being performed. 18. *Collaborates with laboratory leadership to ensure the performance of high complexity testing in all sections is in accordance with policies, procedures, regulatory and safety requirements. 19. *Ensures adequate and appropriate supplies are used for employee safety. 20. *Coordinates quality assurance duties by monitoring key processes that pertain to laboratory services and supports the laboratory's Quality Management System (QMS). 21. *Oversees the departmental budgetary procedure to ensure proper operational and capital planning, appropriate and efficient use of resources, and consistent compliance to budgetary and fiscal controls. 22. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 23. Participates in and/or leads meetings, committees, strategic planning and department projects as assigned. 24. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. Knowledge of organizational and human resource management standards and practices. 2. Knowledge of performance improvement, budgetary and financial methods and practices. 3. Knowledge of management and leadership principles and practices. 4. Knowledge of clinical laboratory test protocols, equipment, and processes. 5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 6. Skill in conflict diffusion and resolution. 7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 8. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes. 9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff. 10. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills. 11. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 12. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 13. Ability to make operational and management decisions in response to changing conditions. 14. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda, and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors. 15. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and work as a team member. 16. Ability to be available for technical issues daily and during after hours, holidays and weekends. 17. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of science or allied health required. Master's degree in healthcare administration, clinical laboratory science or related field preferred. Five (5) years previous supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory and managerial experience in a clinical laboratory required. Must meet requirements to serve as Laboratory Director and Technical Consultant for Waived and Moderate Complexity Laboratories in accordance with 42 CFR * 493.1405 and 493.1411. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)CM certification required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) (DOT) - Characterized as sedentary work requiring exertion up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
