Job Summary

Loudoun County's Department of General Services is seeking qualified applicants for our Maintenance Operations Crew Chief vacancy within the Landfill Operations Division working at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility located in Leesburg, Virginia.

Duties include but are not limited to:
* Supervise, train, evaluate and discipline the Maintenance Operations Crew of approximately 10 heavy equipment operators, truck drivers, and maintenance technicians.
* Establish priorities and make daily work assignments to technicians.
* Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs and schedules.
* Manage compliance with the facility solid waste permit and county policies.
* Oversee maintenance of landfill infrastructure.
* Develop and implement plans to ensure operations are conducted in accordance with Virginia Solid Waste Management Regulations (VSWMRs), DEQ permit, and county policies.
* Ensure that grading and filling activities are completed in accordance with approved grading plans, utilizing electronic GPS survey equipment.
* Operate truck scales according to scalehouse manual.
* Conduct periodic systems inspections.
* Supervise snow removal.
* Maintain records and reports.
* Conduct waste surveillance.
* Encourage safe work practices for all staff.

The Maintenance Operations Crew Chief will be involved in many tasks and is considered a working supervisor. They will also provide backup coverage for other facility positions such as Disposal Operations Crew Chief, Scale Operator, Service Manager, and/or Heavy Equipment Operator, and will operate snow removal equipment. This may include operation of heavy equipment to process, separate, load, and haul materials, and provide erosion and sediment control.

This position is eligible for a $3,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.
Hiring salary commensurate with experience.



Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with coursework or experience in heavy equipment, earthwork, construction, landscaping, vehicle maintenance, MEP (mechanical/electrical/plumbing) trades, and/or commercial mechanical systems, depending on assigned area; four (4) years of related work experience which includes at least two (2) years of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Prefer course work in applied technology, equipment operation and maintenance, agriculture and/or facilities management. Work is performed primarily outdoors during all weather conditions.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

A valid driver's license and good driving record are required (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Successful candidate will undergo pre-employment criminal, credit, and DMV record background checks.

Hold or obtain a Class A or B CDL with "N" tanker endorsement within six (6) months of hire. CDL holders must pass required pre-employment drug and alcohol screening at time of hire and continue to meet DOT/CDL requirements including alcohol and drug testing as outlined by Loudoun County's Alcohol & Controlled Substance Testing Policy for Transportation Employees.

Hold or obtain a Virginia Waste Management Facility Operator's License (Class II) within one (1) year of hire.

Must be available to work Mon-Fri (7:00am - 5:00pm) and rotating Saturdays (as needed on a scheduled OT basis). Subject to recall or being held beyond scheduled workday; must be available to respond to County emergencies (24/7) as directed in accordance with Department policy and written or verbal directive. This position is considered "essential."
