Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant 2 (CNA 2) is accountable to the patient care team for providing direct patient care functions under the supervision of a registered nurse and performing clerical, communication and other related duties to facilitate the efficient functioning of Department services. All duties are to be performed in collaboration with team members. Duties and responsibilities are performed according to standards outlined in competency based/evaluation tool. The CNA 2 participates in and accepts responsibility for functions delegated to the team. This position must demonstrate a commitment of quality service to our patients, the public and our co-workers.

Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant controls patient flow for providers, obtains and documents patient vitals, and performs other patient care and clerical duties. The incumbent in this position will support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public and co-workers.

CNA Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Assists patients in their routine activities of daily living, including but not limited to:

  • Performs range of motion.
  • Ambulates patient.
  • Positions patient and provides skin care.
  • Distributes linen and changes bed as needed.
  • Assists with feeding and meal delivery.
  • Assists with routine hygiene care including toileting and incontinent care, as well as appropriate oral and personal hygiene.

Assists patient care team in collection of patient data and specimens:

  • Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens and processes specimens as needed.
  • Obtains and records heath, weights, vital signs, including pulse oximetry and pain assessment and I&O.
  • Communicates patient status and reports changes in patient condition to licensed professional.

Assists patient care team by performing and explaining designated patient care procedures:

  • Performs incentive spirometry.
  • Transports patient. Preps for diagnostic tests.
  • Assists rehab therapists (PM & R).
  • Performs pulse oximetry/oxygen set up in oxygen therapy.
  • Prepares room (supplies). Provides post mortem care.
  • Prepares for admission and discharge.
  • Assists nurse in emergency situations.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment.
  • Performs suction (oral, naso pharynx).
  • Performs blood sugar finger sticks.
  • Removes IV catheters per licensed nurse instruction.
  • Performs EKGs (department specific responsibility).
  • Performs additional duties as delegated by an RN: phlebotomy, catheter insertion (intermittent and indwelling) and IV starts (peripheral).

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Answers unit phone and directs calls accordingly.
  • Performs data entry into electronic medical database systems. Documents patient care and related duties appropriately.
  • Performs selected patient registration activities.
  • Coordinates equipment/supply needs. Notifies appropriate department of equipment malfunction.
  • Performs any other related duties (e.g., clerical, technical duties) as assigned.

MA Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Greets and escorts patients to exam room in a timely and courteous manner.

Reviews patient chart to ensure all reports and results required by provider are available prior to exam/treatment. Obtains reports and results as required.

Obtains and documents patient chief complaint.

Obtains and documents patient vitals (i.e., height, weight, BP).

Ensures exam/procedure room is appropriately supplied and set up to accommodate encounter based upon reason for patient visit.

Reviews patient-supplied history forms for completeness. Queries to obtain missing information within parameters established by supervising provider.

Assists providers with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.

Draws blood and/or assists in obtaining other specimens. Prepares and routes specimen(s) to laboratories; utilizing in-house services whenever appropriate; following verification of patients' insurance.

Documents all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication prescribed, etc., in the medical record.

Communicates with patients regarding provider advice/instructions within scope of training.

* Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines, and confidentiality policies.

Phones in prescriptions to pharmacies based upon provider's written orders.

Provides results and other information to patients as specifically directed by provider.

Assists patient with the scheduling of future appointments, surgeries, and/or diagnostic testing, as necessary.

The Medical Assistant is not authorized to interpret reports or results or independently dispense medical advice to patients.

Performs other duties as assigned.

CNA Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • CNA license issued by the Commonwealth of VA required
  • AHA BLS ProviderCPR required at hire

MA Qualifications:

* Must be certified Medical Assistant. In lieu of certification at hire, must have successfully completed a medical assistant training program or have two years of experience as a Medical Assistant (eq. Army Medic, Navy Corpsman) at hire.

* For those that have completed a medical assistant training program or have two years of experience, must obtain Medical Assistant certification within 18 months of hire.

* Incumbents hired before March 2021 may be considered grandfathered in terms of education. Should an incumbent obtain the Medical Assistant certification, it would be considered a requirement of their role moving forward.

* AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.

* Proficiency in basic clinical skills as required by specialty (i.e. phlebotomy, blood pressure, EKG, injections) required.

* Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality required.

* Minimum of 2 years' prior experience providing clinical support in a medical office setting preferred.

* Electronic Medical Records experience preferred.
