The opportunity

The Office of Sustainability is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and environmentally-minded student to join our team as a Social Media and Engagement Eco Rep. In this role, you will help promote sustainability initiatives across campus through digital storytelling, strategic content creation, and student engagement efforts. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in communications, marketing, and environmental advocacy while making a positive impact on campus culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Social Media Management

  • Create and schedule engaging content for the Office of Sustainability's social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc.)
  • Develop and implement creative campaigns that align with sustainability goals (e.g. zero waste events, energy conservation, sustainable transportation)
  • Monitor analytics to track growth and engagement, and adjust strategies accordingly
  • Stay up to date with social media trends and platform updates

Student Engagement & Outreach

  • Promote sustainability events, programs, and opportunities to the campus community
  • Table at events and manage interactive displays to raise awareness
  • Assist with the planning and execution of campaigns like Earth Week, RecycleMania, or Sustainability Month
  • Collaborate with other Eco Reps and student groups to co-host events or initiatives

Content Creation

  • Design eye-catching graphics, flyers, and visuals using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Capture photos and videos at sustainability events or around campus
  • Write short blog posts, newsletters, or student features as needed

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing
  • Passionate about sustainability, climate action, and environmental justice
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience with or interest in social media platforms and content creation
  • Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design tools (preferred but not required)
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Willingness to represent the Office of Sustainability at events and in meetings
  • Driver's License preferred
  • Must be able to work with the team at the office's large events which include Move Out (every last week of classes Fall semester, and the last three weeks of April/first week of May, Arboretum After Dark (late October) and any other events where the team's support is needed.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this position, the Social Media and Engagement Eco Rep will be able to:

  • Develop and execute digital marketing campaigns for sustainability initiatives
  • Communicate environmental issues in a way that resonates with student audiences
  • Collaborate with a diverse team to achieve common goals
  • Build a professional portfolio of content and engagement metrics

Work Hours:

  • Various shifts are available and are typically between the hours of 9:00am and 8:00pm. Individual schedules are developed in tandem with departmental needs and student availability.
  • It is expected that all individuals will attend regular staff meetings as part of their assigned hours (biweekly team meeting, various events including Good Stuff in the Winter and Spring, Graduation ceremonies, Arboretum After Dark in October and any other programming that requires the whole team to successfully run events).

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $12.00 - $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
