About the unit The Toxicology department is part of the Core Regional Laboratory at Corewell Health West. Medical Technologists in Toxicology perform a wide variety of testing using mostly lab-developed and validated test methods by liquid and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, time-of-flight mass-spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, spectrophotometry, among other methods. It is a CAP accredited laboratory that has shown continuous growth and advancement over the years. About the hospital Corewell Health Regional Laboratory serves many types of patients and providers. The lab is located on the Butterworth campus and serves inpatients from Butterworth (including Level 1 Trauma Center), Meijer Heart Center, and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. It also serves many outpatient draw sites and offices, along with medical examiner cases across several counties in Michigan. Scope of work Performs clinical laboratory examinations, proficiency testing,quality control, instrument maintenance, and other functions as required. Essential Functions Operates laboratory equipment and performs functions including: calibration, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, instrument validation studies, quality control, proficiency testing, and documentation. Reads, interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results. Documents and communicates significant information and special occurrences which may affect test results to the appropriate clinician. Routinely checks supplies and reagents in order to ensure adequate supply levels. Ensures that reagents are properly labeled and dated. Directs work of laboratory assistants or laboratory services representatives and auxiliary personnel as appropriate.
