Job Summary

Principal Transformation Consultant is a new role within UCSF Health's Office of Transformation, reporting to the VP, Transformation. The Office aims to accelerate results across multiple strategic and operational initiatives, ultimately ensuring UCSF Health's vision and priorities are consistently realized. You will be responsible, in collaboration with the VP, Transformation, for developing the approach, process, and underlying project management and initiative execution infrastructure for driving enterprise initiative portfolio and return under the Office of Transformation. This will include building the appropriate methodologies and tools for defining, measuring, and reporting out on initiative objectives, milestones, key success metrics, ROI, and ultimate impact. You will also be personally responsible for concurrently driving 2-3 initiatives from inception to implementation in collaboration with the executive sponsor and initiative owner. 10+ years of experience desired across strategic thinking, problem solving, analytics, financial analysis and budgeting, and project management in a health system environment. Expert-level skills working with executives, senior clinicians, and others to facilitate/lead opportunity analysis, recommend innovative solutions, structure reliable implementation plans, develop related budgets, identify key metrics/required reporting, and effectively manage initiatives to achieve targeted results. Regularly works on highly complex issues or problems that require analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. Exercises a high level of judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Takes personal ownership for advancing significant change management initiatives. Please Note: This is a hybrid position, where one will be required to work in San Francisco several days a week.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The annual salary range for this position is $164,300- $373,000.

Department Description

The Transformation Office is an integral part of translating UCSF's vision into reality. UCSF Health is a complex system filled with incredibly talented and dedicated people. The Office of Transformation is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and deploying our people and resources to continue to lead from the front and innovate UCSF Health's access, efficiency, and quality performance.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related area or four years equivalent experience/training.
Minimum ten (10) years of relevant health administration experience.

Strategic leadership:
*Ability to define the vision and strategic direction for transformation initiatives, aligning with the overall business objectives. This involves setting clear goals, priorities, and metrics for success.
*Experience developing and executing against strategic growth initiatives - e.g., service line growth strategies, access and site optimization, de novo site/geography expansion, and strategic partnerships.

Project management and performance measurement:
*Advanced skills in project management and planning, with proven experience in short and long-range program planning, tracking project progress, and managing complex projects with broad impact within time and budget constraints.
*Demonstrated ability to select and implement project management methods, tools, and metrics, with a strong focus on conceptual planning, analyzing diverse project scopes, and understanding the cost impact on organizational objectives.
*Demonstrated ability to define and build reporting infrastructure to align accountability, measure true impact, and ultimately drive to intended outcomes.

Problem solving, financial, and analytical skills:
*Effective problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to put forth persuasive arguments.
*Experience conducting/owning diverse financial and operational analyses.
*Experience managing budget and resource allocation for a portfolio of initiatives. This includes making decisions on investments in technologies, systems, or training programs essential for transformation.
*Demonstrated ability to integrate critical information across disciplines.
Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement:
*Advanced ability to coach, facilitate, and influence people at all levels.
*Demonstrated ability to collaborate with leaders across different departments (such as IT, HR, Operations, Finance) to ensure that transformation strategies are integrated and executed cohesively across the organization.
*Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with all levels of an organization, including executive sponsors, board members, and possibly external partners.
*Proven ability to build consensus and buy-in for enterprise-wide change efforts.

Team leadership:
*Ability to provide direction and oversight on a project basis to 2-3 junior consultants in the transformation office.
*Ability to mentor and develop junior consultants in the transformation office.

Proven ability to drive results:
*Experience proactively seeking to improve processes, raising quality and productivity through efficiencies or by implementing best-in-class solutions.
*Demonstrated capacity to anticipate location-specific obstacles and plan for contingencies.
*Demonstrated capacity to course correct when initiatives are off track and find creative solutions to drive outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree (MBA).
  • Previous experience managing direct reports.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Six Sigma / Lean Certification.
