The program Coordinator initiates, sustains, manages, and oversees the implementation of engaged and participatory research involving faculty, students, and community partners. Plans public programming. Assists the Director with administrative duties.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the current major engaged research projects and explore the possibility of new projects and collaborations.
  • Coordinate a development strategy, including cultivation of individual donor and grant writing for external funding opportunities.
  • Assist the Director with administrative duties.
  • Design evaluation instruments to monitor progress of various scholarly projects.
  • Provide strategic leadership and support to partners, staff, and faculty participants in various projects.
  • Maintain professional profile for SJI in the national Social Justice research community.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. Bachelor's degree.
    2. A total of one (1) year (12 months) Demonstrated experience in engaging and working with civic and social justice communities in a large urban setting, e.g., Chicago.
    3. Demonstrated experience managing or coordinating day-to-day office operations.

    (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's in Social Justice Studies, Social Sciences, Humanities, Urban Planning, Public Policy, or related field.
    • Minimum of two years experience as a researcher or working in a library, think tank, or university setting.
    • Writing or editorial skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
