Position Summary

The Salvation Army Duluth Corps is "Doing the Most Good" by providing holistic, person-centered services to individuals and families. In addition to worship services and pastoral care, services include short and long-term case management; food, clothing, utility, rent, and housing support; youth basketball programs, housing programs, and connections to community partners.

The Youth Sports Coordinator plays a key role in supporting and delivering high-quality youth sports programming, with a primary focus on the Rookie Basketball Association (RBA) for youth in grades Kindergarten through 8th. This position is responsible for coaching and refereeing, teaching basketball fundamentals, coordinating program logistics such as scheduling and registration, maintaining equipment and facilities, and assisting with the training of staff and volunteers. The Coordinator also contributes to planning and leading of other youth sports activities that foster educational, recreational, and relational growth.

Wage Range: $$18.10 - $22.28

Essential Functions (Approximate Time Spent)



  • Coach and Referee (35%): Teach and motivate players to develop fundamental basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and positive relational skills while serving as a coach and referee.
  • Youth Program Development (35%): Assist in developing, coordinating, and overseeing all youth sports programming, events, trips, and activities across educational, recreational, and relational areas.
  • Program Scheduling and Registration (10%): Assist with RBA registration and scheduling, including practices, games, clinics, and tournaments.
  • Equipment Management (10%): Manage equipment use, including ordering, maintenance, and proper storage.
  • Facility Oversight (5%): Oversee facility use by unlocking/locking doors, setting up, and cleaning up for events and programs.
  • Volunteer and Staff Training (5%): Support the training of volunteers and staff involved in youth sports programs and activities.


Education and Experience



  • Associate degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and refereeing youth basketball required.
  • Experience planning and coordinating youth programs, activities, or events is strongly preferred.
  • Must pass all required background checks.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) requirements.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with youth, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Solid knowledge of basketball rules, fundamentals, and sportsmanship.
  • Ability to teach, coach, and motivate youth in a supportive and engaging manner.
  • High level of professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Demonstrates integrity, honesty, and a strong work ethic.
  • Comfortable using computers and software such as Microsoft Office and basic databases


Working Conditions



  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the role, including mobility, standing for extended periods, bending, reaching, and regularly lifting up to 20 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Typical schedule includes after-school hours during the academic year and daytime hours in the summer; weekend availability required during the school year for practices and games.
  • Work environment includes both office settings and gymnasiums; position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Active participation in sports and youth activities is required.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and work effectively in an in-person environment.

Driving/Travel Requirements



  • Drive agency vehicles locally to support the mission.
  • Rare out-of-area travel may be required.
