MFC's Nuclear Materials Performance Division is seeking a Division Director (DD) to provide scientific and operational leadership, strategic direction, and management of the Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL), Electron Microscopy Laboratory (EML), and Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL). The DD is responsible for safe and consistent activities ensuring successful implementation, delivery and execution of preeminent materials research focused on nuclear energy, science and technology.

The DD manages an organization of approximately 60 staff and postdoctoral researchers, directing technical efforts to continuously improve research and operations performance and to develop innovative solutions for advanced nuclear reactor fuels and material challenges. This position reports directly to the Materials & Fuels Complex (MFC) Associate Laboratory Director (ALD).

Key functions of the role are:



  • Develop a scientific and operational strategy for the division that effectively supports INL/MFC research outcomes, operational excellence, and focuses on executing mission work in a safe, secure, and compliant manner.
  • Continuous improve research capabilities, quality, and efficiency in response to current and future mission needs.
  • Ensure that the division engages, understands, and meets the needs of the nuclear research and development community, including reactor utilities and advanced reactor developers, academia, and national laboratories.
  • Ensure research results are publicized in quality peer-reviewed journals to help promote understanding and improvement of the performance of nuclear fuels and materials.
  • Execute the MFC Management Model and drive continuous improvement in research.
  • Establish operational objectives, policies, procedures, budgets, and work plans, and delegates assignments to subordinates.

Qualifications

Qualifications:



  • Candidates must have an advanced degree in material science, engineering, physics, or a related field. Experience working in a national laboratory, private industry, or other environment specializing in nuclear reactor fuels and materials technology is preferred.
  • The Ideal Candidate will have a PhD and 10 years' relevant experience.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of human resources, including attracting talent, employee development, engagement, and rewarding employees.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work with a broad spectrum of disciplines in a research environment.
  • Must have demonstrated scientific leadership in respective technical discipline.
  • Proven experience in leadership and decision-making skills with a strong ability to influence at all organization levels.
  • The person in this position must have or be willing to pursue U.S. citizenship and the future ability to obtain an "L" clearance.


Job Information:



  • The target pay range for this position is $165,028- $240,150 annually. The full pay range is $124,848 - $324,600. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.
