General Summary of Position
Evaluates drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance company and handles DUR rejects, pre-authorizations, etc.; performs final check on all prescriptions, ensuring accurate input, labeling, and dispensing; and, provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Acts as the pharmacist in charge in the absence of the manager: directing workflow patterns, ensuring daily responsibilities are carried out by assigned staff, resolving issues requiring management intervention, and performing routine oversight of pharmacy operations.
  • Performs final check on all completed prescriptions, verifying the accuracy of input, labeling, and dispensing; makes corrections as necessary; maintains refill and narcotic logs, and prescription files.
  • Processes prescriptions in the dispensing system; evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions, and contraindications; handles DURs, rejects, preauthorizations, etc.; communicates with third party payors to troubleshoot issues relating to coverage, reimbursement, etc.
  • Provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and allied health professionals as appropriate to provide safe, prompt, and accurate dispensing of all prescriptions; calls physicians and follows up on refill requests; notifies physicians of Rx's requiring pre-authorizations and discusses alternatives as appropriate.
  • Provides patient counseling as appropriate on a patient-by-patient basis.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Licensed as a pharmacist in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia (DC) required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Pharmacy experience, preferably in retail required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • PHARMD - Licensed Pharmacist Current Maryland or DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization/Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in that state or district. required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.

    This position has a hiring range of $100,588 - $190,340
