Description

This position supports the coordination and implementation of the Open Spaces Department's public outreach and educational programming and associated events, volunteer management, as well as exhibit and collections management, specifically as it relates to 17 Mile House Farm Park. The primary duties include coordinating, developing, and conducting educational programming, planning and supporting public outreach events, volunteer recruitment, training, and management, and educational exhibit development, collections inventory management, and general administrative duties to enhance the visitor's experience at the 17 Mile House Farm Park.


Duties

  • Assist with coordinating the Open Spaces Department's volunteer program, including program administration, recruitment, communications, training, scheduling, volunteer engagement, and associated visitor services.
  • Work cooperatively with the Open Space Department staff, Colorado State Extension staff, and other County departments supporting the development and implementation of educational programming associated with the Open Space Heritage Areas and other Open Space properties.
  • Facilitate outreach and support Open Space events to include: 17 Mile House Farm Park programming, annual County Fair programming, and other departmental or interagency public events.
  • Work collaboratively with Communications staff to promote the Open Space Heritage Area volunteerism and related events; promote educational programming at Heritage Areas and Open Space properties; develop educational exhibits and signage; and create volunteer communications.
  • Collaborate with Open Spaces Department partners, to include local schools, business stakeholders, municipalities, historical societies and non-governmental organizations such as the Cherry Creek Stewardship Partners.
  • Support the administration of historical site information, records, and managing the Department's historical artifact collection. This includes support of the artifact donation program and working with the State of Colorado collection repository.

  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with County staff, program volunteers, interagency partners, and public visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Knowledge and ability to develop and conduct interpretive and/or educational programming for the public.
  • Position requires accuracy and attention to detail with strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and with little oversight from assigned supervisor/manager.
  • Knowledge of standard administrative support and clerical procedures including data entry and electronic document preparation, electronic and hard copy records filing and record keeping protocols.
  • Interest in local history and the role of agriculture in shaping Arapahoe County's past.
  • Comfortable with public speaking to diverse audiences.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2 years of educational programming, volunteer management, and customer service experience
  • Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.

Supplemental Information

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
  • Possession of a valid Class "R" Colorado Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Post-Employment Requirements:
  • This position will require a varied schedule with evening/weekend assignments.
  • Work locations and facilities are variable and subject to change based programming and event needs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is generally within County buildings but will also include work at historical sites, the County Fairgrounds, and open space properties in the outdoors under varying weather and site conditions.
  • Generally speaking, this position's visitor experience work is concentrated in the summer month (May to October) and shifts to more administratively focused the rest of the year (November to April).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.
  • Spends 50% of the time sitting and 50% of the time either upright or walking.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 15 lbs.
  • Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 25 lbs.
  • Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties.
  • Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions.
  • Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment.
  • Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment.

Definitions:
Occasionally: Activity exists less than 1/3 of the time.
Frequently: Activity exists between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
Constantly: Activity exists more than 2/3 of the time.
