Job Summary:
The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is seeking an ambitious and highly motivated research specialist to join the laboratory of Dr. Marina Emborg on translational research in neurodegenerative disorders. The person will be integrated into a highly collaborative team aiming to codify biomarkers of disease progression. The person will be responsible for multimodal behavioral evaluations to capture mood, cognitive and motor performance overtime in nonhuman primate models of Alzheimer's disease-related dementia and Parkinson's disease.
Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
- 40% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
- 10% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
- 5% Assists in writing and editing of OBS and IACUC protocols.
- 5% Maintains active communication between WNPRC animal care personnel and the lab with regards to the animals on studies.
- 10% Coordinates the scheduling of procedures for animal experiments, interacting with WNPRC staff and collaborators.

Education:
Required Bachelor's Degree BS/BA from an accredited university in biological sciences or related field.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: -At least 3 years of related laboratory experience, including previous experience working with laboratory animals in a research setting. -Must have experience in the handling and manipulation of nonhuman primates, such as rhesus macaques, including animal observations, monitoring of animal room conditions and post-neurosurgical care. -Must have experience in laboratory compliance with established research protocols. -Experience performing biological sample collection and processing. -Exceptional skills with Microsoft Office Word and Excel. -Excellent written and verbal communication skills. -Strong organizational and prioritization skills. -Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as a member of a research team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: -Familiarity with rhesus macaque behavioral patterns strongly preferred. -Experience in an academic research laboratory strongly preferred. -Experience training staff/student workers in research with rhesus macaques. -Experience managing/coordinating junior program staff/student workers, including creating schedules. -Familiarity with managing confidential/secure data.

Additional Information:
Applicant must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates, biological materials, including infectious agents, and chemicals in a biomedical research setting, and with wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).
The applicant will be introduced to the standard procedures used for tissue handling at the Primate Center and will be required to obtain UW animal care and handling certification from RARC. Additional relevant training may be required as needed.
-Must be TB negative. -Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized. -Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication. -Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles. -University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment. This position is an ongoing position that will require continuous work eligibility. UW-Madison is not an E-Verify employer, and therefore, is not eligible to employ F1 STEM OPT Extension participants. The WNPRC is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public.
