Position Summary
The University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory is seeking applications for a Life Sciences Technician to provide professional support to studies in aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology.

The position will support research of the effects of excessive stormwater releases on sandhills streams as well as the distribution and movements of contaminants in lotic systems; bioaccumulation and trophic transfer using aquatic invertebrates and terrestrial spiders as model organisms, and constructed wetland effectiveness. Fieldwork will include collection of CPOM transported in streams, aquatic macroinvertebrates, emerging insects, riparian spiders, terrestrial insects fish, sediment, and water samples as well as maintaining automated water samplers and data loggers. Laboratory tasks will include preparation of various collected media for chemical analyzes such as lyophilization, grinding, microwave digestion, loading samples on a direct mercury analyzer, collecting morphometric data from biota, and sediment characterization. Office tasks will include management of complex data sets, assisting with analyses, and report/manuscript writing.

  • Experience with terrestrial insect identification and evaluation of carbon cycling in aquatic and terrestrial systems

  • Carry monitoring equipment to stream locations long distances from parking areas during highly variable weather conditions.

Assist with safe and efficient sample processing for carbon, trace element or radionuclide analyses. Depending upon media and chemical being analyzed, sample preparation can include air drying, freeze drying, ashing in a muffle furnace, sifting, grinding, filtering, and acid digestion.

This will include entering and proofing data from field and laboratory data sheets, organizing and backing up electronic data, and making appropriate transformations needed to produce the final data format. This will also include assisting with statistical analyses.

Maintains credentials required to enter and utilize the SREL Counting facilities and work in Soil Contamination Areas ( SCA). This will include maintaining SRS Rad Worker II training to allow entry into SCAs without escort and Advanced Rad Worker certification so the employee can scan their self and equipment with a Ludlum counter before leaving the SCA to confirm that they are not contaminated and not transporting Cs-137 from the SCA

Conduct, sometimes alone, activities associated with field research in remote areas. Field work will include sampling of sediment, water, biota, and organic matter as well as geomorphic characterizations.
