About the Job

***This is an AFSCME Technical position***

This position has the responsibility of assisting the Early Childhood Teacher and other staff in planning and implementing programs in an inclusive early childhood program, and assuming classroom responsibility when the Early Childhood Teacher is absent. This is a full-time 12-month continuous appointment, 40 hours per week (M - F, 9am-5pm.).

Anticipated start date: July 28, 2025.

Bargaining unit consideration begins on 04/07/2025 and ends on 04/17/2025.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position in this class.

Regular, On-Going Tasks:

(80%) Assist head teacher in implementation of program plan to advance the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual competence of children.
This includes:

  • Providing an environment of acceptance in which children can grow toward a sense of positive identity.
  • Accurately observing, recording, and reporting individual and group behaviors.
  • Planning and carrying out daily activities for a group of children.
  • Preparation of educational materials required to implement the daily program.
  • Provides sanitary and social meal/snack times.

(15%) Participates in establishing and maintaining an attractive, safe, healthy environment

  • Works with the Head Teacher to ensure the care and educational program meets or exceeds state licensing standards.

(2%) Direct part-time student staff and substitute staff in the care of children and provision of activities.

(3%) Stays knowledgeable of and completes all yearly in-service hrs (currently 24) as mandated by MDHS State Licensing.

Positions in this classification have lead worker responsibilities for part-time staff, students, and substitute staff.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A combination of education, work/intern experience that meets State of MN Human Services Licensing Act, Rule 3 (9503.0032) requirements for Child Care Centers. For example, a HS diploma/GED, 24 quarter credit hours, and 4,160 hours directly related work experience.
  • A background study and reference verification that meets the requirements of State of MN State Human Services Licensing Act, Rule 11.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A BA/BS degree in any field from an accredited college or university (9 quarter credits must be in education), or Certificate/Credential for 2-year program in child development.
    Early childhood education at a MN community college or technical college.
  • License from the Minnesota Department of Education for Prekindergarten Associate.
  • Experience working with children and families from diverse cultures.
  • One year or more of formal experience working with children (b-age 5) in a full-day childcare program

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to physically supervise young children and immediately respond to emergency situations; able to visually observe children in their environment, protecting them and preventing harm to them.
  • Ability to communicate with young children and their parents.
  • Agile enough to move quickly, bend frequently, get up and down from the floor and small chairs frequently, carry and lift children weighing between 15-50 pounds (depending on age group), willing to sit on the floor with children and to take children on walks, pushing 4 - 6 seat strollers.
  • Must not present a risk of transmission of reportable communicable diseases as verified by a professional health care provider.
  • Ability to model positive problem solving and respectful behavior
About the Department

UMD Children's Place is located directly on campus in Kirby Plaza and is founded in the belief of the critical importance of the first years of life and the need to embrace the diversity of our world today. The vision of Children's Place seeks to be a model program providing quality, nurturing care and educational experiences for young children and their families of diverse backgrounds and abilities by building on the strengths of our community. The program is licensed to provide full-time care for 46 children between the ages of six weeks and the first day of school.

Program hours are 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The program will be closed for all University holidays and emergency/weather closings.

Programs collaborate with other university departments, as well as community early childhood professionals and specialists.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.94 to $23.39 per hour.; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: This is a 100 percent, 12-month continuous appointment M - F, 9am-5pm.
