Position Summary

The Core Business Solutions Owner (CBSO) is responsible for ensuring the ongoing success and optimization of the business value of our DCRI 1 Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) solution. DCRI 1 leverages OnePlan to manage our entire research project portfolio as well as all of our internal investment and technology projects. The CBSO is a hybrid role, bridging the cross-functional gaps between research operations, finance and business operations, and technology. The CBSO must be willing and able to move in and out of the weeds in any of these areas while continuously formulating, adjusting, and implementing holistic strategies to drive toward overall optimization and operational excellence. The CBSO must be adept at building relationships, identifying and solving problems, facilitating a diverse set of stakeholders, and the ability to develop both breadth and depth of understanding of all operations of an Academic Research Organization.

Primary Responsibilities and Task

  • Team Leadership: Lead key operational workstream team(s), both technical and business focused, consisting of key business subject matter and technical experts. Support efforts to maintain and continually improve the operational effectiveness and business value of the solution, including strategic and operational alignment, process improvement, technical efficiency, program and project management skill development, and data-driven decision making.
  • System Administration: Work closely with the Technical Support team to ensure that any technical issues are addressed in a timely fashion and that all system administration tasks are executed as planned.
  • Solution Management: Coordinate with and work alongside the technical team members and OnePlan to stay informed about product enhancements and features that can benefit the DCRI. Stay in sync with OnePlan's release planning and schedule.
  • Governance: Operate within and enforce established DCRI 1 governance framework and processes. Work directly with the DCRI 1 Ownership team, executive sponsors, key DCRI stakeholders, and OnePlan to clearly define and communicate the product vision and steadily deliver improvement priorities.
  • Cross Solution Collaboration: Work with other Core Business Solution Owners to foster a seamless business solutions ecosystem. Explore opportunities to better integrate the solution with other core solutions, tools, and platforms and avoid sub-optimization.
  • Continuous Improvement: Champion a culture of continuous improvement, actively seeking feedback from users and stakeholders to drive innovation and enhancements in order to meet evolving business needs, optimize performance, and increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with stakeholders to gather enhancement ideas, address concerns, ensure alignment, and adapt to evolving business requirements.
  • User Engagement: Foster strong user engagement and collaboration among, faculty, research operations, business operations, and technology staff. Facilitate teamwork and knowledge sharing and identify opportunities to improve user experience and satisfaction.
  • User Training and Support Strategy: Contribute to a comprehensive training and support strategy to enhance users' proficiency with the DCRI 1 solution, ensuring its maximum utility for operational research teams.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Ensure that best practices, lessons learned, and insights gained from operating DCRI 1 are shared and institutionalized within the organization.
  • Performance Monitoring: Define and track metrics to regularly assess the solutions' performance and business impact against strategic and operational objectives.
  • Data-driven Decision-making: Promote data-driven decision-making by utilizing the project management system's reporting and analytics capabilities to provide insights into project and portfolio performance.
  • Compliance Assurance: Ensure compliance with industry regulations and data protection requirements relevant to academic research, taking a proactive approach to maintain adherence.

  • Works with minimal supervision and with extensive latitude for independent judgment.

Required Qualifications

Education/Training: (refer to the Duke HR website for minimum qualifications required if applicable)



  • Generally requires bachelor's degree, preferably in business administration; Masters degree or post graduate training in clinical discipline or business or healthcare administration is a plus.



Experience: (refer to the Duke HR website for minimum qualifications required if applicable)



  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in program and project management, preferably spanning business, technical, and clinical research settings.
  • Extensive project management, personnel management, and supervisory experience on large, strategic initiatives.
  • Experience managing enterprise-level business, technical, and/or clinical project portfolios.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience using large PPM tools. Experience with OnePlan is a significant plus.
  • Experience in clinical/CRO environment in business or clinical operations roles is a plus.
  • Experience with multiple project funding sources, especially federal government funded projects.
  • Experience with professional services organizations and external project delivery.
  • Familiarity with Agile planning and execution principles.
  • Familiarity with Change Management, process mapping, and data visualization concepts and frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce and/or Oracle/Seibel is a plus.

Registration, Certification or Licensure:



  • Project Management, Agile, and/or Change Management certifications are advantageous.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke U niversity provides an annual base salary range for thisposition as USD $ 82,370.00 to USD $164,742.00.
