About the Job

Job Code (0001 temp/casual) Veterinary Technician Assistant

This position has the responsibility to provide basic technical care for animals of multiple
species. Employees will assist veterinary technician staff and DVM staff with a variety of basic
veterinary medical procedures to ensure proper medical care.

Successful candidate will be assigned to perform minor and routine animal treatments, assist
DVM and Veterinary Technicians, as well as perform data entry and maintain work areas.

50% - Perform minor and routine animal treatments to include, but not limited to: Nail and teeth trimming, administering prescribed medications, documenting treatments and condition of the animals under the veterinary team's care.

25% - Maintain proper documentation of records to include: billing labs for all service fees, billing labs for purchased pharmaceuticals, maintaining USDA animal Records.

20% - Maintain multiple pharmacies including: filling prescriptions, restocking supplies, maintaining cleanliness of the area, track medication expiration dates, and maintain anesthesia machines.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

Some work assignments will involve exposure to animal allergens, high levels of noise, and/or disinfectants and sanitizing agents. To protect employees, the University of Minnesota may require you to wear personal protection equipment, some of which may require medical monitoring and fitness testing. All required protective equipment, testing and medical evaluations will be provided by the University.

All offers of employment for this position will be conditioned on the completion of a medical questionnaire, evidence of current tetanus immunization, and/or a fitness for duty examination to ensure the applicant's ability to work in an environment that may present occupational health and safety hazards associated with work.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of post high school experience or education in
veterinary technology.

Preferred Qualifications:
Student or recent graduate of a veterinary technician health program

About the Department

Research Animal Resources (RAR) primarily focuses on the service and administration of the animal care and use program at the University of Minnesota. The position of Laboratory Attendant is union represented, and is part of a staff of over 100 employees including Professional and Administrative staff, Civil Service staff, Union Represented members, and student employees. RAR has an approximate daily census of 24,000 rodent cages in 19 buildings split into geographic teams around the Twin Cities Campus.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00/hr
