Who We Are

As part of Nexus Water Group the College Utilities working with Utility Services of Alaska and Golden Heart Utilities to bring safe and clean water and wastewater operations to Fairbanks. Together these three companies are known as Fairbanks Sewer and Water.

Overview

Fairbanks Sewer and Water has an opportunity for a College Utilities Laborer (Temporary). The primary responsibility of this position is to work as a laborer on construction projects. Work will be split between general labor and maintenance to vehicles, grounds, and facilities.

Work location and schedule

This position is based in Fairbanks, AK.This is a temporary laborer position with a duration of employment up to 6 months. The schedule is normally 10 hours shifts Monday through Saturday. The laborer will assist the crew in which they are assigned with all manual labor. The laborer will work with tools and equipment in a safe manner.

What You'll do

  • Performs various physical duties as assigned
  • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment
  • Maintain all safety standards
  • Moves, secures, installs, builds, loads, or unloads materials
  • Effectively using heavy and light equipment, depending on the jobsite/assignment
  • Moving tools, equipment, or other material as directed in plans or by supervisor
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Perform tasks involving strenuous manual labor including but not limited to:
    • Shoveling
    • Raking
    • Mowing/Weed eating
    • Lifting heavy materials

What You'll bring

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous mechanical or maintenance experience.

Nice to have

  • Possession of either Class B CDL Permit or Class B CDL License
  • Experience operating a skid steer and/or backhoe
  • Prior experience working as a laborer
  • Prior experience working with a utility
  • Prior experience with grounds maintenance

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in construction work
  • Ability to safely operate various vehicles and equipment
  • Skilled in safe use and maintenance of hand tools & power tools
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to consistently be to work on time and ready to work
  • Ability to read & understand labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
  • Attentive to detail and alert at all times to ensure safe working practices
  • Able to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50lbs without assistance
  • Ability to lift heavy objects greater than 50lbs with assistance
  • Ability to perform strenuous, manual labor for every shift

Working Environment

  • May visit construction sites, undeveloped areas and potential project locations on military installations in Alaska.
  • Walking and lifting
  • Works in industrial locations that are noisy, dusty, and have strong odors.
