Description

ABOUT THE POSITION: As an Embedded Firmware Engineer II, you will develop, integrate, and verify production firmware for J.W. Speaker's advanced vehicle lighting products. Our software team uses model-based development with MATLAB, Simulink, automatic code generation, and agentic AI as established development methods. You'll translate requirements into reliable, embedded solutions, collaborate across engineering teams, and ensure firmware performs as intended on physical hardware. This position is onsite.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE: You have 5+ years of demonstrated experience delivering microcontroller-based firmware, with strong embedded C, bare-metal, real-time systems, and electrical engineering fundamentals. You bring practical experience with MATLAB/Simulink model-based development, CAN/UDS communication, and hands-on hardware debugging using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and hardware debuggers. You're comfortable leveraging automatic code generation and agentic AI while taking ownership of reviewing, debugging, and verifying the resulting firmware. Most importantly, you understand the software executing on the microcontroller, regardless of how that software was produced.

You communicate technical decisions clearly, approach verification with discipline, and enjoy collaborating to solve complex hardware and software challenges. A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience, is required. Additional experience with embedded cybersecurity, functional safety, or automotive software development is a plus!

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

You will EXPLORE by:

  • Developing and maintaining executable models for lighting control, sensor processing, diagnostics, communication, and fault handling.
  • Translating system and customer requirements into clear software requirements, interfaces, state machines, timing constraints, and acceptance tests.
  • Utilizing agentic AI to implement and investigate changes, develop engineering automation, and support verification while critically reviewing its output against requirements, hardware documentation, and measured behavior.
  • Exploring emerging technologies and development methods to improve embedded software quality, efficiency, and reliability.

You will INNOVATE by:

  • Generating and integrating embedded firmware using MathWorks tools, JWS libraries, configuration inputs, and code-generation infrastructure.
  • Integrating models with microcontroller peripherals and low-level services, including interrupts, DMA, timers, ADCs, PWM, CAN, SPI, IC, and UART.
  • Diagnosing complex issues across models, generated C code, hardware abstraction layers, communication traces, and physical hardware.
  • Implementing and verifying CAN/CAN-FD communication and UDS diagnostics, including programming workflows, session behavior, timeouts, and recovery.
  • Contributing to embedded cybersecurity solutions, including secure boot, authenticated updates, provisioning, and related technologies as project needs and experience permit.

You will PERFORM by:

  • Creating repeatable tests and maintaining traceability between requirements, implementation, and verification results, including boundary conditions, fault responses, timing, and resource utilization.
  • Applying strong embedded C and real-time systems fundamentals to review generated code, troubleshoot concurrency issues, and verify software behavior on microcontroller hardware.
  • Participating in design reviews, generated-code reviews, static analysis, and applicable functional-safety activities, including ISO 26262 practices where relevant.
  • Maintaining reproducible builds, configuration management, and clear engineering documentation throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Collaborating with electrical, systems, test, and manufacturing engineers to resolve integration challenges and production-related issues.

We offer competitive wages and the following great benefits:

  • Health, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Short term & Long-term disability insurance
  • 401k with employer match
  • Paid time off, including Vacation, Sick & Personal Time, and 11 paid Holidays
