Summary: Responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, organizing and preparing samples, conducting experiments, and recording and analyzing data.
Does this position require Patient Care? No Essential Functions - Perform laboratory experiments following established protocols and procedures. - Prepare and handle samples, reagents, and solutions, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety guidelines. - Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, conducting routine calibration and troubleshooting as needed. - Record experimental data accurately and maintain organized records of procedures, protocols, and results. - Compile and analyze data using appropriate statistical and analytical methods. - Assist in data interpretation and presentation, contributing to research findings and reports. Working Conditions: The successful applicant will have their own desk and laboratory bench space located in the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. There is a mouse facility in the same building as well as several additional research cores. Copious amounts of coffee and tea are available to all trainees. We are seeking a highly-motivated and creative research assistant to work on cutting-edge projects aimed at developing next-generation treatments for chronic pain and migraine. Under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. William Renthal at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the successful applicant will carry out and design well-controlled experiments and publish their results. The successful applicant will receive scientific training, professional development, and mentorship within the Renthal Lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The research interests of the Renthal Lab focus on the genetics and epigenomics of chronic pain and headache. Projects will leverage recent advances in single-cell genomics to characterize molecular features that are unique to nociceptors, which are the peripheral sensory neurons that transmit pain signals to the brain. The successful applicant will aid in the design of targeted pain and headache therapeutics, including novel gene therapy vectors. This research will require skill development in molecular biology including cloning, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, Next-Generation Sequencing, bioinformatics, and neuronal physiology. Additionally, there will be ample opportunities to collaborate with other labs within Harvard Medical School and the surrounding hospitals and research institutions. Prior research experience is preferred. As a 2-year commitment is required, this is a great opportunity for a candidate interested in subsequently applying to graduate or medical school. Prior research assistants of Dr. Renthal have advanced to graduate training at Harvard, UCSF, Washington University, and McGill University.
