Job Summary The UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory is seeking an experienced Technical Writer who excels at translating complex theories into practical applications and has a deep understanding of their field. This role requires a seasoned professional who can work under the limited supervision of the laboratory director, independently managing a wide range of responsibilities within the technical writing function. The ideal candidate possesses a broad knowledge base, excels at analyzing diverse and complex issues, and can identify effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities: * Writing and Editing: Produce and refine various comprehensive and challenging materials, ensuring stylistic consistency, logical flow, organization, and rational content development. Highlight key points for clarity and maintain coherence throughout all documents. * Research and Interviewing: Conduct in-depth research, select reliable sources, and conduct interviews to gather accurate and relevant information. Ensure the credibility and precision of all written content. * Content Strategy and Layout: Develop content strategies and recommend layout designs that effectively convey complex information. Provide editorial guidance to ensure all materials are clear, readable, and professionally presented. * Coordination and Production: Manage the production process for both printed and digital materials, ensuring a smooth transition from draft to final publication. Oversee the conversion of printed documents into digital formats and maintain an organized online archive.
The candidate can produce high-quality content in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple deadlines, and balance diverse requests from two different units. They must be adept at incorporating feedback from various stakeholders professionally and tactfully. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $67,000 - $143,800 (Annual Rate). Department Description The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery, to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost-effective yet compassionate, and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our primary focus. The Department is comprised of seven divisions, including Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery.
The UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory (ITL) is a high-complexity clinical laboratory that provides diagnostic HLA testing services for therapeutic transplantation, disease associations, drug hypersensitivity, and transfusion services. The laboratory is a CLIA-certified, ASHI-accredited, CMS-approved freestanding histocompatibility laboratory licensed by California and New York. ITL supports and facilitates solid organ (kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas, and islet) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantations. The laboratory serves as a contract laboratory for Donor Network West, the northern California organ procurement organization. ITL also serves as a core laboratory for the NIH Immune Tolerance Network and supports several national clinical trials. The laboratory is committed to providing optimal patient care through short turnaround times and reporting high-quality results.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- 3+ years Professional writing experience required
- Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
- Thorough knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.
- Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciences.
- Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production.
- Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.
- Thorough research and fact verification skills.
- Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.
- Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Thorough attention to detail, project management and organizational skills.
- Skill to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understand the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system's genetics. This knowledge is essential for accurately interpreting complex HLA data and translating it into clear, precise written content. Familiarity with the diversity and intricacies of HLA alleles and antigens is crucial to ensure that all documentation remains accurate and up-to-date.
- Create content that effectively communicates complex HLA concepts to a range of audiences, including scientific, clinical, and patient-facing contexts.
