Duties, Responsibilities & Other

KCI is looking for a bright and highly motivated Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or other Natural Sciences student that is interested in working in the natural resources and transportation infrastructure consulting field. Applicants can be in an environmental science or related college program.


The intern will work under the supervision of a technical manager within KCI's
Natural Resources Practice to gain exposure to real world projects and daily work tasks. Summer interns will work a 40-hour week, with at least 10 weeks of work required during the period from mid-May to mid- August. Interns will be assigned a dedicated supervisor and mentor, are required to attend planned activities, and complete assigned tasks.

Duties may include:

    Assist in natural resource surveys in Georgia including identification and delineation of water resources (wetlands, streams, open waters, etc.) and protected species/suitable habitat assessment surveys.
  • Collect GPS data in the field with the use of a hand-held GPS unit.
  • Prepare GIS maps and figures for use in reports.
  • Attend site visits with regulatory agency representatives.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports and permitting documents.
  • Apply quality control procedures in alignment with ISO.
  • Become familiar with regulatory requirements and restrictions for various projects and ensure compliance.
  • Attend project meetings.
  • Work in a team environment or independently.
  • Provide on-time delivery of project expectations with favorable feedback.
  • Overnight travel within Georgia or in adjacent states may be required.
  • Perform administrative duties as requested.


Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a college Engineering or Science program.
  • No experience required.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.


Performance Expectations

  • Complete Annual Individual Training Program
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
  • Coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required
  • Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
  • Complete other duties as required/assigned
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(85% typical)
  • Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
  • Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
  • Assist with preliminary concept designs and submit for approval
  • Compare field data to base plan
  • Conduct site visits and gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes and photographs as needed
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for review and approval
  • Review and approve shop drawings
